Commercial and Industrial garage doors typically have at least two torsion springs. Many of these doors use four or more torsion springs in one of four setups: linear, duplex, triplex, or mixed.

The triplex system functions very similarly to the duplex system. In this setup, there are two springs inside the outer spring.
The mixed system, as you guessed, features a combination of the linear system and the duplex/triplex system. Mixed systems use more than one set of duplex or triplex springs on each half of the garage door. This becomes an option for installers when the garage door shaft measures long enough to accommodate multiple springs. If one of these garage doors weighs very heavy, it is sometimes a better option to have multiple pairs of duplex springs sets on the garage door.
Users of the duplex and triplex systems, however, often find it difficult to detect a possible broken inner spring.

A Loud Bang In The Garage
Another thing that can reveal a broken torsion spring is a loud bang emanating from your garage. This can be extremely loud, and can often sound like a gunshot or a burglar breaking into your home. This bang is a result of the large amount of torque that your broken tension spring has released in a mere split-second. An approximate 2-inch gap in your torsion springs coil is also a sign of breakage. In the process of torqueing up the spring, the coil is being extended to create a travel distance . When a torsion spring breaks, it exerts the force it preserves while going back to its natural state, as the fracture splits the springs coil into two separate coils.

Garage Door Torsion Springs are normally centered above the garage door on a one inch shaft. At one end of the spring is the winding cone that is secured to the shaft with set screws. At the other end of the spring is the stationary cone. This is secured to the spring anchor bracket, which is secured to the header. On two-spring assemblies the stationary cones of both springs are mounted back to back to the spring anchor bracket. The shaft running through the springs transfers tension from the springs to the cable drums at the end of the shaft. These drums pull on the cables, which pull on the bottom of the door to balance the weight of the garage door.

Measure The Torsion Spring Wire Diameter
First, measure 20 coils and divide that measurement by 20. This will give you the wire diameter. For example, suppose the measurement of 20 coils is 5 inches. 5 divided by 20 gives you a spring wire diameter of .250. Be extremely precise with your measurements. If the measurement of 20 coils is 4 7/8 inches a difference of only 1/8 inch youll have a spring wire diameter of .243, which means you need a different sized torsion spring. To confirm your initial measurement, measure 40 coils and divide the measurement by 40.Some torsion springs have a color coding system green for .243, gold for .250 and red for .225. However, there are two color coding systems and one really isnt used anymore, so your measurements and calculations with 20 and 40 coils are more reliable.

Replace Both Torsion Springs
If you have two torsion springs on your door, you should replace both of them. Most doors have springs with the same cycle life rating. In other words, when one spring breaks, the other spring will probably break before too much longer. Since you will be going to the trouble of changing one torsion spring, it is usually better to change your second spring as well. This will save you time in the garage as well as money on the shipping costs.
Some doors, however, have two springs with different dimensions. Many times, the cycle life of the broken spring is shorter than the cycle life of the unbroken spring. This means that you may still have another couple thousand cycles left on your unbroken spring. If you only change one spring now, you will probably need to change your other spring fairly soon down the road. Therefore, we recommend that you still replace both springs, but that you purchase springs with the same length, inside diameter and wire size.

Introduction To Standard Torsion Springs
A standard torsion spring has a stationary cone which secures the spring to the spring anchor bracket. Since this bracket is secured to the wall, the stationary cone, as its name suggests, does not move. The other end of the torsion spring has a winding cone. This winding cone is used when installing, adjusting, and uninstalling the springs. When installing the torsion spring, the coils of the spring are wound up to create a lot of torque.

Since these cables hold the weight of the garage door, the torque from the torsion springs does not dangerously spin the shaft until the spring is loose. Instead, the garage door weight slightly exceeds the lift produced by the torsion spring. As a result, a properly operating garage door with the right springs should not seem to weigh nearly as much as the garage door itself. When this principle holds true through the duration of the door’s travel, the door is balanced.
With the help of the torsion springs, you should be able to operate the garage door manually without much trouble. Likewise, it does not take too much work from the garage door opener to lift the garage door. As the door opens , the torque on the shaft keeps the cable tight on the cable drum. As a result, the cable winds up on the cable drum, allowing the torsion springs to unwind.

IPPT is affected by the wire gauge, the springs diameter, its length, and how tightly its wound. Calculating the correct IPPT of spring is not an easy matter. You have to know the doors weight to know how much force the spring needs to exert to neutralize that weight. Door manufacturers can provide some basic metrics, but frequently additional weight is added in the form of struts to strengthen the door.

To begin lets start with understanding what the Wayne Dalton Torquemaster system is and what a
torsion spring system is. There are similarities, but there are also critical differences in each system.
Wayne Dalton Torquemaster System:
Wayne Dalton designed the Torquemaster system in an attempt to improve on the torsion spring
system. He kept the idea of a spring bar/torsion tube mounted on the header above the garage door
opening on the inside of the garage. His system, however, utilizes one or two springs that are inside the
spring bar/torsion tube. The number of springs used is determined by the weight of the garage door.
This system also utilizes small plastic drums mounted on each end of the spring bar/torsion tube. Cable
wrap around these plastic drums and then attach to the bottom bracket located on the bottom of the
bottom garage door panel on each side. In this system the internal springs provide the force to counter
balance the weight of the garage door while the cables and drums do the lifting. Winding these springs
to the proper tension involves using an electric drill, in older models, or a socket and socket wrench in
newer models. The spring are then wound a set number of times depending on the weight of the
garage door. In the Wayne Dalton Torquemaster system if only one spring is used the spring winder will
always be on the right side and on a two spring system there will be a spring winder on each end. In a
application it has its limitations and problems.
