There Isnt One Youre Done
The floor paint I used is super strong and can hold up to a car , but it does NOT require a top coat. There is a top coat you can purchase but I was ready to wrap this project up! I let our floor sit for 48 hours before moving everything back in and I couldnt be happier with it. I suppose time will tell, but for now its perfect. The paint makes the whole space feel more organized and pulled together, but Im also hopeful that it will protect the floor from further cracking or weather damage.
I said this so many times on my Instagram stories, but each step of this project was very VERY simple. Scrub the floor. Rinse the floor. Patch the cracks. Yes the entire process was a LOT of work but it was a series of smaller projects to make up the overall big project. Once I took it step by step it didnt feel nearly as overwhelming.
Garage Floor Coatings Vs Garage Floor Coverings
Garage floor coatings, typically available in either a paint or an epoxy, are more of a permanent solution than their floor covering counterparts. Garage floor paints give your floor a new look while protecting its surface from damages, oil spills, and moisture. Garage floor epoxy coatings, including the Colored Epoxies 1002 Clear Epoxy Resin Coating, use a chemical reaction to harden and create a long-lasting and protective finish.
To create a more durable finish, some garage floor paints like the KILZ Concrete and Garage Floor Paint add a small amount of epoxy to their formula.
Garage floor coverings, offered in floor mats or tiles, are removable protective solutions that shield your existing floor from scuff marks and oil stains. Floor tiles like the GarageTrac Modular Garage Flooring Tile interlock to resurface and protect damaged garage floors. Garage floor mats like the Happybuy Garage Floor Mats are easy to install, rolling onto your existing concrete slab to create a durable and easy-to-clean surface. While garage floor coverings are more convenient, they arent as durable as their garage coating counterparts.
Rocksolid Polycuramine Garage Floor Coating Kit Review
RockSolid Polycuramine Garage Floor Coating Kit Review
Rustoleums RockSolid line of concrete coatings feature a no peel guarantee and according to their website:
The Garage Floor Coating, like all RockSolid Polycuramine® coatings, offers unsurpassed durability. Polycuramine is 20 times stronger than epoxy. With its resistance to salt, oil, gas and other harsh chemicals, this is one of the toughest floor coatings on the planet. Its easy to maintain and will last a lifetime while still looking fantastic.
This claim and guarantee sounded fantastic so we decided to try it out for ourselves.
What is a Polycuramine? We mostly review epoxy and urethane based products however, RockSolids Polycuramine products claim to combine the best product attributes of polyurea, epoxy and urethane chemistries into one.
Other product features include a high gloss finish, low odor and VOCs, hot tire pickup resistance and chemical resistance. The Garage Floor Coating Kit is available in five color variations in either a 1 car garage kit or a 2.5 car garage kit. The finished surface can accept foot traffic in 8-10 hours and vehicle traffic 24 hours after application. Instead of shipping in a plastic pail or metal can, the Rocksolid Garage Floor Kit arrives in a burst pouch that you roll, shake and pour directly onto the concrete. Also included in the kit are a concrete etch, foam roller, decorative paint chips and the burst pouch.

When RockSolid introduced their new line of Polycuramine garage floor and interior coatings, we were left scratching our heads at first. After all, what in the heck is Polycuramine? We admit we had never heard of it before. Moreover, what happened to the old RockSolid Polyurea garage floor coating and why the change? Furthermore, why is Rust-Oleums name on RockSolids product?
So after being asked by more than one reader of All Garage Floors, we decided it was time to see what the Polycuramine fuss was about, why Rust-Oleum is involved, and determine if the RockSolid Polycuramine garage floor coating is better than the older Polyurea coating that it has replaced.

Before: The Old Garage Floor
Let me start by showing you the old garage floor. Like most, it’s a big slab of ugly, splotchy concrete. It’s super durable, sure, but concrete stains so easily and I swear it actually creates dust and dirt on its own.
As common as the concrete floor is, the layout of the garage is pretty unique. This is a basement garage that we use for winter boat storage , so it’s a typical width, but is twice as long as normal. We’ll be continuing to use the back half for the boat, but the front half will become my workshop.

After: The New Garage Floor
The next day, I was delighted to find that even though the floor still looked wet, it had actually cured to a super glossy, hard finish. I couldn’t believe how slick and smooth and glossy it was.
I’ve used and seen other concrete paints and coatings before, and the RockSolid really impressed me with how easy it was to apply and how durable the finish. It was so satisfying to see this go from ugly to awesome in just a few days.
The whole garage feels so much cleaner and crisper and I can’t wait to get everything moved in to start setting up my workshop.
Epoxy Flooring Services In Your Area
Garages are usually the least finished room in the house. The bare concrete floor is unprotected from chemicals, stains, and impact. The edges, especially if your garage floor has a stair, can start to crumble after a few years. But an epoxy floor coating can repair existing damage and prevent future deterioration.
Garage floor coating contractors start by removing surface level damage such as cracks, spalling, and stains. Then they lay an epoxy coating that binds to the concrete. This epoxy floor repels everything from car oil to road salt. It even stops the small cracks caused by temperature changes and heavy impact.
Local epoxy floor installers can customize your floor coating for your area’s climate. You can even pick between solid colors and patterned chip flakes for long-lasting protection that looks great. Type in your zip code and HomeAdvisor will connect you with prescreened garage floor coating contractors in your area.

Can I Diy Epoxy Concrete Sealing
It is possible to do this job yourself. You can save $4 to $7 per square foot by doing so.
Must-haves:
- Proper surface preparation for epoxy and detail-oriented application
- Patience during the curing process, which takes several days
- DIY kit with all necessary materials and proper amounts of each
Risks:
- Improper prep that leaves grease, oil, or solvents on the floor.
- Failing to repair all cracks, holes or other damage before applying the coating.
- Improper coating can trap moisture, which can cause bubbling and buckling.
Apply Rocksolid Garage Floor Coating
The RockSolid Garage Floor Coating kit contains just about everything you need to coat the floor, most notably the two-part foil pouch that contains the chemicals that make up RockSolid’s polycuramine coating. There are also foam rollers perfect for application and plenty of little decorative chips for sprinkling onto the surface later.
To activate the coating, I just rolled the pouch from side A towards side B, squeezing it like a tube of toothpaste until the seam between the two burst.
From there it’s mix, mix, mix! You’ve got to stir, shake, knead, and flip the bag all around for 2-3 minutes to thoroughly mix the liquids inside, so that you get even color distribution and a good chemical mix.
Then you snip a corner off the bag with scissors to create a spout for pouring the coating out, right onto the floor.
You have to work REALLY quickly with this stuff, because it starts to set up in under an hour. Jo came over and helped me with this step, and having two sets of hands was a real lifesaver. We started by cutting in around the edges with a brush, moving as quickly as we could.
Then we poured a ribbon of coating onto the floor in a line, just enough to cover a workable piece of the floor.
We used the roller to roll the coating out, first pulling any excess towards us so that it didn’t pool at the wet edge. We rolled as evenly as we could, working in small areas at a time, and trying my best to keep a wet edge as we went.

Garage Floor Repair And Preparation
Please visit the page that describes our system for concrete restoration and crack repair. This is the first step in the process. We fix all blemishes and fill cracks to ensure that blemishes do not bleed through your decorative top coat.
We grind every garage floor to remove impurities, such as rust, oil, or grease, creating a smooth, flat surface. This also opens pores in the concrete, allowing for our polyaspartic / polyurea coating to be absorbed into your concrete.
Our Evaluation Of Rocksolid Polycuramine Garage Floor Coating
We feel that this new lineup for RockSolid couldnt have come at a better time. While the Polyurea garage coat system that it replaced was a fairly good product, many of the reviews for it by the average DIY installer were less than great.
There are many benefits to a polyurea garage floor coating, but the pitfalls for a DIY coating is in the installation. The biggest complaints received about the older RockSolid polyurea coating was delamination and finish issues. Many if not most of the problems to these issues was not due to a poor product, but the result of the limited application time available for the product. If it wasnt installed in 20 to 30 minutes, it started to thicken up and problems ensued.
This RockSolid floor was installed by one of our readers. He used SikaFlex to fill the contraction joints after the coating cured.
Because polyurea cures fairly quickly, it doesnt have enough time to seep into the pores of dense concrete that is prepped only by etching and not by grinding. This can lead to delamination issues of the coating. Secondly, if you dont get the product down fast enough the finish will not be very glossy or can even loose its smooth texture among other issues.
After putting a call in to the Rust-Oleum tech line, they claimed that the new RockSolid Polycuramine formula has better wetting characteristics that allows the coating to penetrate into the concrete better. This is a big help for concrete that is etched instead of prepped by grinding.

Garage Floor Makeover With Rocksolid Floor Coating
I used RockSolid Garage floor coating to help transform our garage.
Disclosure: I am so grateful to RustOleum for sponsoring this project. The results are better than I expected!!
Im not sure I would have reorganized and refreshed the garage if it hadnt been for my garage floor makeover! Ive been dying to try this RockSolid garage floor coating for years and ever since we closed on the current house, Ive been waiting for the temperature to get warm enough that I could tackle the floor! To see all the various organizational things I did in here, check out my blog post about the garage reveal. Theres a full materials list of the added storage items over there!
Before I start, note that our garage floor needed a lot of prep. Like a lot a lot. Yours may not require allllll these steps if youre lucky. Also note that each step of this makeover was basically simple, but there definitely were a number of steps. Try not to get overwhelmed and just take it one step at a time.
Where To Purchase Rocksolid Polycuramine Products
Weve had to update this section on multiple occasions since we first posted this article in early 2014. For a while the RockSolid lineup was only available from Menards. Fortunately however, Rust-Oleum has since expanded the distribution of the RockSolid product to Home Depot as well as some automotive parts stores such as Summit Racing.
If you dont have one of these stores near you, Rust-Oleum is now offering
Pricing will vary but to give you an idea, expect a single 1-car garage floor kit that covers up to 250 ft² to retail for approximately $125. Weve seen it priced as low as $99 from different outlets when on sale. They also have made available a 2.5 car garage kit as well that will cover up to 500 ft².
It didnt take too long, but Rust-Oleum is now marketing the Polycuramine formula under the Rust-Oleum Restore brand of products as well. As an example, you can find it at Lowes under the name Rust-Oleum Restore garage floor coating kit. You may be able to find it at other outlets under the Restore branding as well.

What Is The Best Epoxy Kit
Epoxy wood is one of the most popular building materials today. It is also one of the strongest, making it perfect for use in a wide variety of construction projects. However, many commercial epoxy kits have been developed with poor quality and ineffective durability, meaning that some customers may be forced to replace the epoxy often or even need to replace the entire kit.
