How To Program A Standard Liftmaster Remote Control

How to program a chamberlain garage door opener

A LiftMaster remote control can be programmed to activate many devices, including garage door openers, gate operators, commercial door openers, and external wired-in receivers. Heres how you program a standard garage door opener remote made by LiftMaster.

  • Locate the “Learn” button on your garage door opener. It’s on the same side as the antenna. You might have to remove the light lens to access it. The button may be either green, orange, red, purple, or yellow, and beside it is a small LED.
  • Press and release the Learn button.
  • Within 30 seconds of pressing the “Learn” button, press and hold the button you wish to program on the remote control for three seconds, then release.
  • The LED indicator light will turn off and/or the garage door operator lights will blink to indicate that programming was successful.
  • Its as easy as that!

Ready Yourself Are You Sure You Want To Travel The Diy Path

This task is dangerous. Before even touching your LiftMaster Chamberlain garage door opener, consider these vital factors:

    • Imprecise or incorrect level adjustments to door travel parameters will interrupt the safety reversal system.
    • If the garage door opener requires excess force to close the garage door due to inclement weather conditions or obstruction, the safety reversal system may be affected.
    • If the garage door opener model is old, NEVER force adjustments to compensate for a binding garage door.
    • Once reprogramming is complete, TEST the garage door opener safety reversal system.
    • Ensure the reprogrammed door height accounts for tall vehicles like trucks, vans, and SUVs to avoid damaging the car or garage door.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: If the safety reversal system is damaged or rendered ineffective during the reprogramming process, SEVERE INJURIES or DEATH can occur. A closing garage door is under excessive tension, is a massive system, and is DANGEROUS. It can threaten the life of family, friends, children, and pets.

Unless you are a handyperson with experience with this equipment, DO NOT risk it. Instead, look to a local certified LiftMaster Chamberlain specialist to install or fix it for you.

How To Program A Chamberlain Clicker Universal Garage Door Opener ...

Here are a few simple steps for programming your garage door remote once you have access to all the components:

  • Make sure your new remote is the same brand as the garage door opener you are using. A remote meant for a LiftMaster opener will not communicate with a Genie opener, for example, because most openers and remotes operate on specific frequencies using different information.
  • Carefully climb up on the ladder so you can examine your garage door opener.
  • Inspect the opener to find the learn button. All modern garage door openers have one you have to look for it carefully if its not immediately apparent. If you still cant find the button, take off the light cover since the button could be hiding there.
  • Once you find the learn button, press it until it begins to blink. Once the light on the opener is flashing, press the open button on your garage door opener remote.
  • Generally, youll have a 30-second time limit between pressing the learn button and needing to press the button on the remote.
  • Give the process a minute, and then press the open button on the remote again to test the garage door. If it opens, youve successfully programmed your remote!
  • As there are many different types of garage door openers, the steps above are general guidelines rather than specific instructions.

Before you start taking your LiftMaster Chamberlain down and opening it up, make sure youve taken this life-saving information to heart:

    • If you make adjustments that are faulty, or even just a bit off, the limits on the garage door travel system will interfere with how the safety reversal system functions.
    • Your garage door cant go up against too much force or it will create interference for the safety reversal system.
    • Old model openers shouldnt ever use force adjustments in place of binding a garage door.
    • After the reprogramming is complete, the first step is to TEST the safety reversal system on your garage door opener.
    • If you have a large vehicle that almost touches the roof of your garage, make sure it wont get damaged by the system. Check the clearance before bringing your vehicle into the garage.

If you dont have a well-functioning safety reversal system, anyone who gets in its way could not only be seriously injured but possibly even killed by a garage door that closes on them. If you arent a skilled or experienced handy-person, do NOTunder any circumstancestake this on yourself. Contact a certified LiftMaster Chamberlain professional near you. Check That Your Remote Control Is Compatible With Your Door Opener

Its important to remember that Chamberlain remote controls will work only with garage door openers made after 1993. And your garage door will also need photoelectric sensors.

If youre not sure whether your door has those sensors, take a look at your door tracks. If theyre there, theyll be positioned at or near the bottom of the tracks. If your door opener uses a dip switch instead, a Chamberlain remote control wont work.

Now check that your model of door opener will work with your remote control. To do this, you need to know the color of the learn button inside your door opener.

Mount your ladder and remove the cover from the opener. The learn button is inside, usually on either the back or side panel, near where the antenna hangs down.

Different models of openers will have learn buttons in different colors. Your remote control manual should tell you what color button is compatible. If youre still not sure, visit and check out the compatibility chart.

If your remote control is compatible with your garage door opener, youre ready to move to step 2.

Pro tip: You may be able to save yourself a trip up the ladder by looking for the wire antenna. This hangs down from the side of your door opener. If its yellow or purple, the learn button will be the same color. If the antenna is a different color, though, youll need to get out that ladder.

You cant expect them to remember everything when theyre busy playing. Besides, why would they have to think about these things when simple innovations could protect their lives, right?
