Homelink System Programming For Genie Garage Door Openers
Clearing the HomeLink system happens by pressing and holding the first and third buttons down for about 20 seconds or until the indicator on the HomeLink blinks fast. Then release both HomeLink buttons 1 and 3. You only need to clear the HomeLink from your car if you do not have an unused button or this is a pre-owned car that may have a previous owners garage door opener installed.

Check That Your Remote Control Is Compatible With Your Door Opener
If youre not sure whether your door has those sensors, take a look at your door tracks. If theyre there, theyll be positioned at or near the bottom of the tracks. If your door opener uses a dip switch instead, a Chamberlain remote control wont work.
Now check that your model of door opener will work with your remote control. To do this, you need to know the color of the learn button inside your door opener.
Mount your ladder and remove the cover from the opener. The learn button is inside, usually on either the back or side panel, near where the antenna hangs down.
Different models of openers will have learn buttons in different colors. Your remote control manual should tell you what color button is compatible. If youre still not sure, visit and check out the compatibility chart.
If your remote control is compatible with your garage door opener, youre ready to move to step 2.
Pro tip: You may be able to save yourself a trip up the ladder by looking for the wire antenna. This hangs down from the side of your door opener. If its yellow or purple, the learn button will be the same color. If the antenna is a different color, though, youll need to get out that ladder.
If You Have A Control Panel Use It To Program Your Door Opener
If you have a control panel, you can use this to program your door opener. It means you wont have to climb up to the learn button on the door opener.
There are several types of control panel: multi-function, motion-detecting, smart panels with LCD screens, and doorbell-style with a single button. The process for programming each kind is different, so make sure you follow the correct instructions for your model.
If your door control panel has a learn button, press and release it twice.
If your control panel has an LCD screen, youll have a few more steps to go through.
Start by pressing the menu button. Now scroll down until the program option is highlighted. Use the sideways arrow key to select it. Now scroll down until the remote option is highlighted, and press the sideways arrow to select it.
If your control panel looks like a doorbell, press and hold the light button on the side. With the light button pressed, press the button on the front. The light should blink once and then stay on.
Now move quickly onto step 7.

Can Nearby Interference Affect My Garage Door Opener
Yes. Electronics, security lights, and nearby radios can cause your garage door opener to work intermittently. This would be confirmed if your remote control only works if it is considerably away from these gadgets. To amend this, take sources of interference away from the garage door openers main control box or away from the garage door opener itself.

For Systems With A Hand
Before you begin, make sure the remotes battery is new. If youre not sure, its best to replace it, recommends The Spruces Jeff Beneke.
Inspect the garage door opener that attaches to your garage door for a learn button. Per J.D. Powers Dustin Hawley, you can usually find this button near the antenna radio receiver on the opener.
Next, press and release this button to start programming it to your vehicle. Systems will usually have an LED light that illuminates to indicate when the opener is trying to pick up new radio frequencies.
Take the garage door opener remote and press down the button you want to use as your primary control for opening and closing the door. Press the button for 5-10 seconds, as Hawley advises. The LED light will turn off when the remote is synced with the opener.

Put The Control Button In Learning Mode
Press and hold the two outside buttons of your control button simultaneously for up to 20 to 30 seconds only. Make sure not to press it for more than 30 seconds because it will reset your system.
Pay attention to the indicator light. Youll know youve entered learning mode when the light changes from steady to flashing.
Auto Open When Arriving
Teslas will combine your GPS signal with your HomeLink transmitter and auto open your garage doors as youre approaching your house.
This is a really convenient feature and Id recommend having it on as long as your garage door has the safety sensors at the bottom that will prevent it from closing if anything is in the way.
You can also choose the number of feet away from your garage when the car should send the signal to open it.
Its nice to have your garage door fully open before you get to it so that you dont need to stop and wait. However, the number of feet that is right for you will depend on your garage door opener and how far away it could receive a signal.
Id also recommend having your garage door in view so that for those rare times when you come home and the garage door is already open. This will cause your car to send another open signal, causing your garage door to start closing.
Itâs important to understand that the car has no way to know whether your garage door is open or closed, and unfortunately HomeLink simply sends an âopen/closeâ signal, which causes the garage door to open if its closed or close if its opened. Some caution is necessary, but the feature works well, especially when youre arriving home.
Tesla recommends only using the auto-open or auto-close features when your garage door is installed with safety sensors along the bottom.

Do A Deliberate Replacement
Programing your garage door opener without a remote implies your system never had a remote, to begin with. But you might be reprograming it because you keep losing the remote controller. So its not that you dont have a remote. Its that you prefer not to use it. In this case, youll use the remote controller to program your car buttons. Afterward, the remote becomes redundant.
To do this, you need to have your car inside the garage, or within sight of your garage opener control box. Check the cars inner roof to see what buttons youre working with. In our example, the Genie set-up has three buttons and a round indicator light. As you start your programming process, youll notice the indicator light is off. The light sits above the middle button.
