Long Island Street Parking Rules

For starters, the entire city is a designated tow-away zone. That means that if you are found in violation of any parking rules, you could be towed. NYC is so serious about towing that the NYPD even has its own fleet of tow trucks. Heres how to avoid being towed right off the bat:

  • Make sure your vehicle registration and inspection stickers are up to date, if applicable.
  • Never, ever double park your vehicle. If theres already a car parked beside the curb, do not park beside it. Ever.
  • Do not park within 15 feet of either side of a fire hydrant. Dont rely on those nifty painted curbs, either. They lie.
  • After you park, check the SpotAngels app to check the street parking rules and be reminded when you need to move your car

Long Island City is even home to the MoMA PS1, a nonprofit offshoot of the Museum of Modern Art, dedicated specifically to experimental and contemporary art . If youre more into film, television, and video games, the Museum of the Moving Image is also well worth checking out.

    Parking In Long Island City

This is my second top driving in to NYC. Last time I parked at the Port Imperial ferry terminal. This time though I am looking to stay in Long Island city, as the hotels have good value, and the subway access is good.

Two hotels I am looking at both have paid parking, but the parking is first come first serve, and is not guaranteed.

As a contingency, I am looking for good places to park my car in Long Island city. I would be parking for 5-6 nights.

Hopefully looking for somewhere safe, and even better would be if I can park and access my car as I desire.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

I looked on Spot Hero for you. There are about 25 garages around Long Island City and they charge $120 for 5 days of parking. Unless you are willing to search for a space somewhere in Astoria and move your car every 2 days for Street Sweeping, that’s the best you are going to do.

$25 per day is pretty good in NYC.

$25 per day is acceptable to me. Since parking in garages is something I basically never do where I live , I really don’t have any experience with different parking apps, and which are are better or more reliable.

    Long Island City Parking Tips

It is always best to pre-book parking in advance before going out. There are plenty of websites and parking apps out there that offer easy interfaces for parking reservations at secure spots and garages. Most of these parking lots and garages offer cheaper rates than drive-in garages as well.

Even if you are parking in the most secure parking garages or lots, never leave your valuables exposed on your car. Many people make it a habit to drop off e-gadgets like mobile phones and laptops on the cars passenger seats. Car-jackers consider parking lots as an easy target and can steal any valuable from even the most secure car parking lots or garages. Do not underestimate anyone.

Do not randomly park anywhere in the city. Go for street parking only at designated parking spots. Do not park in reserved spots like disabled parking slot if you are not eligible for the reservation.

Keep an eye out for traffic signboards to avoid unwanted traffic violations. Many cities and streets across the country have parking restrictions like alternate side parking, loading zones etc. If you fail to move your vehicle when the restriction begins, you could end up on the wrong side of a parking ticket.

Never gamble with the parking meter if you have parked your car in a metered parking spot. Always move your car out before the metered parking timer runs out. Trying your luck with a metered parking lot could result in your car getting towed or impounded.
