How To Program A Liftmaster Max Remote Control

LiftMaster MAX remotes work with all 315 MHz or 390 MHz LiftMaster garage door openers manufactured since January 1993 . Follow these steps to program the various MAX models.

  • Locate the “Program” button on your garage door opener or keypad. On the 890MAX and 895MAX remotes, locate the “Program” button and press it using a safety pin or paper clip until the LED on the front of the remote control turns on. It will then be ready to program. On the 893MAX remote, locate the “Program” button on the back of the device located under the visor clip. Press the button to activate it. On the 877MAX keyless entry keypad, press the * and # buttons simultaneously until the lighted keys stop flashing and remain on steady. Note that when the controller is in programming mode, you need to program one button at a time.
  • Press and release the button on the remote control that you wish to program.
  • Wait for the remote control LED to stop blinking, then slowly press and release the button again. Repeat until the light bulb blinks. Dont press the button after the light bulb blinks as this will prompt the remote to transition into a different setting, rendering it inoperable. If you do press the button, you will need to go through the steps again from the beginning.
  • Once the light bulb blinks, press any other button on the remote control.
  • To program other buttons on the remote control, repeat steps one to four.

    Accessing The Garage Door Motor

  • 1Set up a ladder beneath the garage door motor in your garage. The garage door motor is a roughly 8 in × 5 in box mounted to the roof of your garage. Open the ladder by pulling the 2 metal halves apart from each other and pressing down on the 2 cross-beams. Then, climb up the ladder until you can comfortably reach the garage door motor.XResearch source
  • If you dont have a ladder, purchase one from a hardware store or a home improvement store. Or, borrow one from a friend.
  • 2Open the panel on the left side of the motor unit. If youre standing in front of your garage door and looking at the motor unit, the left-hand light compartment doubles as a panel covering the units controls. Pull firmly down on this panel until it comes away from the motor unit. The hinges at the bottom of the panel will allow it to swivel down without falling.XResearch source
  • The panel placement may differ from one style of unit to the next. The panel may also be located at the back or side of the garage door motor box.
  • 3Locate the “Learn” button at the front of the control panel. Once youve lowered the light panel out of the way, youll see a series of warnings and safety information, a light bulb, and a small control panel. Look over the control-panel area until you spot a small button labeled “Learn.” The button will only be about 12 inch in diameter.XResearch source
  • Depending on the make and model of your garage door opener, the button may be yellow and round or purple and square.

Check If The Garage Door Is Frozen

During the winter, it comes as no surprise when the garage door gets frozen to the ground. The garage door seal always sits on the floor when the door is fully closed. This can easily get frozen and prevent your Liftmaster opener from working. If it is frozen, you need to melt the ice before you attempt to open it again. It might be a little time consuming, but thats the only way forward.

    Open And Close Travellimits

If your garage doorfully closes, touches the floor, and then reverses back up, then you need to decreasethe travel limit. Think of a garage doors travel limit as the distance itneeds to travel to close or open entirely.

When the travel limit exceeds the distance the door travels, the LiftMaster garage door opener assumes there is an obstruction in the way of the door, so it reverses.

    To troubleshoot thisissue

  • Find a step ladder and place it beneath your LiftMaster garage door opener.
  • Locate the two Travel Limit dials on either the left or right side of your garage door opener, depending on where you are facing. They are denoted by a garage door with an arrow pointing up or down.
  • To reduce the travel limit, turn the dial with a flat screwdriver in the direction opposite to the arrow shown beneath the dial. A full turn of the dial means you are reducing the travel limit by 2inches.
  • Test run your garage door. If the door closes entirely without reversing, the issue has been fixed, else repeat step 3.
  • After you reduce the travel limit, and the door doesnt reach the floor when you close, increase the closing travel limit. At this stage, its all about fine-tuning till your garage closes properly without reversing.

Locate The Learn Button On The Motor Unit

The LEARN button plays a crucial role in programming your garage opener. Inside the motor unit, there is a light bulb and a control panel.

    • On the control panel, locate a tiny circular or square button labeled LEARN. The button may be yellow, orange-red, purple, or green depending on your garage opener model. The color of the units antenna wire matches the color of the button so if the wire is yellow, the button will be yellow.
    • Take note of the small LED adjacent to the button. The LED lights up the same color as the button.

Remote Control Does Not Activate The Opener

This is a regular issue. It doesnt happen too often, but sometimes it just occurs. Here are some troubleshooting tips. For best results, follow the steps as it is written

    • Activate the opener with the door control: The first thing to do is to try operating the garage door opener with the door control unit. If it works, then it means the problem is not with the opener.
    • Check if the door lock feature is activated: This is a feature that disables the ability to use remote controls to operate the garage door opener. So, the garage door opener will not respond to any command from the remote if it is activated. If the Pushbar LED indicator on the door control unit is blinking, then the door lock feature is activated. To deactivate it, hold the lock button for about 3 seconds. The LED should stop flashing.
    • Reprogram the remote control: We have a dedicated guide on how to program all Liftmaster remotes to the garage door opener. I recommend you read it here.
    • Check the remote battery: If your attempt to program the remote didnt work, the chances are that the remote battery is dead, and you need to have it replaced. Replacement batteries for garage door remotes are dirt cheap, and you can pick some up for 15 bucks or less. The Duracell CR2032 3V Coin Battery is an excellent choice for garage door remotes, and youll get extra batteries for future use.

Liftmaster Formula 1 Intermittent Remote Control Problems

How to Install and Connect a Next-Generation LiftMaster Belt Drive Garage Door Opener

We own four of the LiftMaster Formula 1 openers and none of the remotes are battery-powered. All of the bulbs in the openers are incandescent and the ones in the garage are CFL and the openers have worked flawlessly for years. Of late mine has been really intermittent. I can be parked underneath the opener and open/close the door using the remote without issue but when I back out it’s impossible to close the door even from one foot outside the garage. Then if I leave it open, run an errand and come back X minutes later and accidentally push the remote it will close the door but then I cannot reopen from the door. Conversely, if I get out of my car, go into the garage and close the door using the hardwired control then come back X minutes later – my remote will open the door. It’s very frustrating and confusing. I might add that it’s been exceptionally hot and humid so this problem may be moisture related. Regardless, this same thing happened several years ago and I called our local dealer – they sold me a hard CB radio-like antenna to replace the wire with. Of course as soon as I had it in hand the problem went away so I haven’t installed it yet but after reading these posts I don’t think it’s going to resolve my problems. Any ideas? Thanks!
