One way to save additional money is to sign up for Time of Use rates with the electric utility company. Most utility companies offer TOU rate schedules to customers as a way to decrease energy usage during peak hours.

TOU typically have two different rates, one for off-peak and one for peak. Off-peak hours are generally during the morning, early afternoon, and overnight. During off-peak hours, electricity rates are lower.

Secure And Strip The Circuit Wires

If necessary, feed the circuit wires for the new 240-volt circuit into the panel. If NM cable has been used, you may need to strip away the outer sheathing of the cable so that only about 1/2 inch of sheathing extends into the panel through the cable clamp.

Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from each end of the two hot wires and the green ground wire, using wire strippers. If you are installing a 120/240-volt circuit, also strip the insulated white wire.

What Are My Options For Installing 240v Receptacles In An Attached Garage

My workshop is currently wired with 120V receptacles fed from the main panel in the house by #10/3 with ground attached to a double-pole 30A breaker.

I’d like to power a 13A, 240V table saw, and need to install a 240V receptacle. It would also be convenient to install a couple of “extension” receptacles around the perimeter so that I have of the option of changing my shop layout. I see two options, and would welcome advice.

Option 1:

Extend the existing wiring around the shop, using double-ganged boxes for a 120V receptacle on one side, and a 240V receptacle on the other side. The 240V receptacle would use both hots and the ground, and for the 120V side, I would draw from either hot leg to create a split receptacle.

Option 2:

Install a subpanel in the workshop, fed from the currently-installed 30A breaker in the main panel, and create separate circuits for 120V and 240V. Each circuit would receive its own breaker.


  • Option 1 seems most straightforward. But is it correct or safe?
  • If choosing Option 2, what size breakers should I use for the 120V and 240V circuits?
  • A subpanel is probably the safest bet. It will allow easier access to cut power in an emergency, and it will offer better protection of the wiring.

    If you go with option 1, you’ll have to step down to #12 or #14 wire at some point to feed 120V receptacles. Which means you’ll potentially be able to draw 30 amps on a #12/#14 wire, before the breaker trips.

    How Many Outlets On A 20 Amp Circuit In A Garage

    Electrical fires account for 51,000 house fires every year. Outlets and wiring are not something you want to mess around with, especially with the wiring in your garage near your vehicles.

    The quick answer is that you should have no more than ten outlets connected to a 20 amp circuit, for fire safety reasons.

    However, it actually depends on what is drawing power from those outlets.

    The maximum power draw of an outlet is 1.5 amps. In theory, you should be able to install 13 outlets to a 20 amp circuit and still have 0.5 amps to spare.

    So why is ten the recommended maximum? Because using 19.5 out of 20 amps tends to be what blows the circuits, resulting in the dreaded walk of shame to the fusebox.

    The issue typically arises when a new device is plugged in to a circuit that is already powering other devices. A garage with multiple large devices will particularly have this problem.

    If the car, refrigerator, lights, music, washer, and dryer in the garage are already running on outlets on the same circuit, starting a drill or other power tool could blow the fuse.

    Always be aware of what other appliances and electronics are being used around the house when youre powering something up in the garage.

    The short answer is yes, you do need a permit to install a 240-volt outlet. Anytime you do major electrical work in your home, youll need a permit.

    Installing new electrical outlets qualifies as major electrical work. You can get your permit from the local building authority or your local Building Codes Division office.

    There is some electrical work that does not require you to get a permit. For example, a permit isnt necessary for replacing a light fixture, outlet, or light switch. Its when you add new circuits and receptacles that you need a permit. If youre only adding a single circuit, the permit is often very affordable.

    • Use a stud finder to find and avoid studs in your walls.
    • Alternatively, start at a corner or door jamb and measure 16 inches over.
    • If you dont find a stud at 16 inches, try 24 inches.
  • Hold the electrical box level on the wall at the height youd like your dryer outlet, avoiding the stud by two inches.
  • Put painters tape on wall before outlining, in case you make a mistake or want to move locations.
  • Trace the outline of the front of the box onto the wall/painters tape with a pencil.
  • Hold a level on the box as you trace so your finished outlet wont be crooked.
  • If you cant get your pencil around the whole outline, make several marks around the perimeter and connect the lines with a level.
