How Long Do Garage Door Keypads Last
Garage door keypads make our life easy in many ways. Instead of walking around with a clunky remote or keys, all you require is a unique code. This convenience makes it worthy of having a working keypad.
But how long do they last? A garage door keypad wont last forever. I say this because this gadget is installed outside. For this reason, it suffers from humid weather and other sources of wear and tear. These deteriorating elements combined with age can bring about malfunctioning.

How To Change Garage Keypad Code
While garage door remotes provide the convenience of opening and closing your garage door from the comfort of your car, these handy gadgets do not always come in multiple copies.
If you have more family members using the garage, alternative ways to access the garage are essential. One such way is by entering a code on the keypad located by the door outside your garage.
However, if you think someone unauthorized to access your garage knows your current entry code, it is time to change it to secure your home. This tutorial shows you how to change garage keypad code.
Why Reprogram A Garage Door Keypad
There are many reasons why you might think of reprogramming your garage door keypad. First, you can consider taking this initiative if you had given the code to a service technician. The technician might have completed the assigned task but your car might be at risk.
Since he knows the code, anything might happen. With the rising cases of car theft, you should not leave anything to chance. Therefore, do not hesitate to reprogram your garage door keypad.
Also, consider reprogramming your garage door keypad, if you have relocated to a new home and it has a new garage that is fully automated. In this case, you should not take chances because the previous owner or anyone who used to live there might have access to your garage anytime he or she pleases. This way, you will prevent anyone from accessing your garage when you are not there.
Also, you might have lost your garage door remote and you have fears that someone might have access to your garage. Although you might buy a new remote, you might have to reprogram the entire keypad so as to prevent the chances of an intruder accessing your garage even at night. Such is usually the case if someone collected the remote and wants to access your garage when you are away or asleep.

Why You Might Want To Program Your Keypad
Having a keypad is great to be able to let people into your garage without you being physically there. Using your keypad is essential if you want to add, change, or program your pin. Why might you want to change your pin?
- When moving into a new home
- If you have renters and are changing tenants
- If someone knows your code and you want to prevent them from entering
- You have an old roommate move out
- Your code has become compromised
- If you keep having trouble remembering your code
Enter Your Permanent Pin Followed By The Star
To set a temporary pin for your garage door opener, enter your permanent pin, then instead of pressing the Enter button, press the star key instead.
Once you make that entry, the light bulb on your garage door openers motor unit will flash three times for most models. If your opener unit does not have a light bulb to flash, it should click three times.

How Do I Reprogram A Wired Keypad For A Garage Door Opener
We moved into this house about 15 months ago. No problems with this until recently the external keypad stopped working. The keypad itself is Liftmaster, but the unit itself and wired openers are Sears craftsman model 139.53425SRT. The keypad does NOT have an ENTER key, but it has ‘*’ and ‘#’ buttons, in addition to the 0-9 numbers. The keypad is wired to a button pad just on the inside of the door.
The best instructions I found for a keypad without an enter key say this: “Is this a hard wired keypad? If so: To program the keypad, first unplug the garage door opener from the electrical outlet. Next, remove the nameplate from the console that the keypad plugs into and locate the program/operate switch. Flip the switch to program. Next, enter your desired four-digit PIN number into the keypad. Slide the switch back to operate and plug the garage door opener back in. The keypad should be programmed.”
I followed this, although the button pad is wired with a battery. So when it said to unplug the opener from the electrical outlet, I instead removed the wires from the button pad opener to the actual opener in the garage ceiling. Should I instead have remove the battery at this point?
The button pad that the keypad is wired to does have a PROGRAM/OPERATE switch under the nameplate.
A Compromised Keypad Code
For starters, your garage door might need a new password if you suspect that an unauthorized person has the passcode to your keyless entry pad.
The main role of a garage door opener with a personal entry code is to safeguard the garage from unauthorized entry. If you believe a breach has occurred to that security, you can no longer be confident about controlling who can enter your garage.
The surest solution is to change that entry code to lock out any unauthorized person that might have the previous code.

Programming Genie Digital Remote Transmitters With Internal Set Switches
These transmitters work by matching the settings on the internal code setting switches with the same set of switches in the receiver on the garage ceiling. The receiver is located either behind the light lens of the Genie garage door opener motorhead, or inside an external small rectangular box on the ceiling, which is connected to the motor head by a set of wires. Note: the frequency of the transmitter must be the same frequency as the receiver on the ceiling for it to work. Genie has been making the 390 MHz frequency exclusively for the last 15 years.
How Often Should You Change Your Liftmaster Keyless Entry Code
You should regularly update your garage door opener code, even if you dont share it with anyone outside your immediate family. One of your kids could inadvertently share the PIN with one of their friends or accidentally give it to a telephone or online scam artist. As a best practice, you should change the PIN at least twice a year to optimize home security.
Reprogramming Using Your Door Control
The first step is to clear the garage door area. By that, I mean your garage area should be free from any obstruction. After that, use a ladder to climb up and find the learn button on the door control and press it twice as you release it. You will notice an LED flashlight blinking.
Once the LED light blinks, reach for the garage door keypad outside and quickly set a four-digit pin of your choice, and press enter. Once you are through, the opener lights will flash, implying that reprogramming is complete.
The other option is to reprogram the garage keypad using the door opener. The steps are concurrent to the one mentioned above but remember you only have 30 seconds to enter the new pin after pressing the learn button twice.
