How Do I Measure A Garage Door Properly

How to properly measure for a new garage door

At first glance, you may only think about measuring the width and height of the garage door opening to figure out what size door you need.

However, there are a few other measurements to take into consideration.

  • To start the measuring process, youll want to measure the exact width and height of the door opening.

Most door openings measure in feet, but if your door is slightly larger or smaller, be sure to include any inches or fractions of inches in your measurement. Getting as close as possible to an exact measurement will help to ensure that your door fits.

  • Next, youll want to measure along either side of the inside of the door opening to make sure you have enough room for the track.

Depending on what type of track you want, youll usually need between 3.75 inches and 5.5 inches of space for the track along either side of the door.

If youre planning on installing two doors next to each other, the post area between the two doors will need to be double whatever size track you need.

Doors that will be manually lifted or those that will use an electronic opener at the side of the door instead of on the ceiling will need even more room at each side.

Manual openor chain hoist doors can require as much as 10 inches of extra space on each side.

An electronic opener at the side can take up as much as 18 inches on that side.

  • After measuring at the sides of the door, measure from the top of the door opening to the ceiling.

This area is called the headroom space.

Find The Length And Height

Find the length and height labeled 1 and 2 on the diagram of your rough opening to determine what size garage door you need. Measure from the two widest points of your garage door opening. The doors rough opening will be slightly larger than the door youll need, and a finished opening should be equal to the size of the door youll need.

Measure The Depth Of The Backroom

Find the dimensions of the backroom labeled 6 on the drawing. The backroom is the amount of space you have to fit the garage door when its in the upright or open position. Start from the opening of your garage door toward the back of the garage. The backroom ends at the first obstruction or when your tape measure reaches the back wall. The amount of backroom you need depends on the height of the garage door you buy. To have an adequate backroom, youll need a depth equal to 18 inches plus your garage door height. You may need additional backroom to install an automatic garage door opener, usually about four feet and two inches.

Measure The Height Of The Door

How To Measure

The height is the distance between the floor and the ceiling of the finished opening. Measure at the doors highest point in feet and inches. Order the exact size door you need instead of allowing space for the door jamb or the seal.

Write down if you notice any irregularities in the height of the door, like an unleveled floor. Your garage door company should know about defects, so they can make adjustments as needed. If your flooring is not level, you can change the size of the garage door seal.

Roller Shutter Garage Doors

How to Measure for Garage Doors

Generally for a roller garage door, you will install the tracks and the support brackets for the curtain roll inside the garage opening in order for maximum sizes to be achieved in many cases, because the average curtain roll size for a roller door is between 300 and 450mm, it needs to go behind the lintel to maintain the best drive-through height. Some smaller ‘Compact’ roller curtain sizes are available by using smaller slats which can get the roll size down to as small as 205mm.

Modern roller shutters do not require a sub frame as the tracks fit directly to the garage structure. Insulated roller doors can fit inbetween a structural opening, whereas most non-insulated steel roller doors must fit behind a structure as the track guides are very different in construction .

For the Gliderol steel single skin roller doors, the order width is the curtain width and does not include fixing lugs and support brackets, and the height is the top of guide height without the curtain roll.

Important: Roller shutter doors are ordered by different dimension references depending on different manufacturers. Beware, some use the inbetween guide opening size and others the overall size, some also order the width by the roller curtain width as the reference .

General rule of thumb: The ordering size for the width includes the side channels but the height does not include the door roll – this is with reference to aluminium roller doors.

Garage Door Measurement Tips

When following this garage door measuring guide, there are several things you can do to get the most accurate measurement. Following these tips can help you catch any issues the garage door installer should be aware of:

  • Measure to the closest fraction of an inch.
  • Consider taking each measurement from a few different places. When you get the same number several times for each dimension, you can be confident you have an accurate number.
  • Locate the nearest electrical outlet to install the garage door opener.
  • Note any potential obstructions, such as light fixtures, ductwork, pipes or staircases.
  • Examine the door jambs and the header to check their condition. If anything is uneven or unstable, they may need replacement.
  • Check if the floor is level. An uneven floor might mean your previous door was a custom fit.

But, if youre the do-it-yourself type, here are step-by-step instructions for measuring your garage door and ensuring your garage can accommodate an opener and the door in both the open and closed positions.

1. Measure the width and height of the door opening called the rough opening to the closest inch. This will be approximately the same size as your door.

2. Measure the space to the left and right of the opening called the sideroom. Most vertical track systems require 3.75 inches on each side. Some systems require even more space, at 5.5 inches.

3. Measure the distance between the top of the opening and the ceiling called the headroom. Standard systems require 12 inches of headroom, and most openers require an additional 3 inches of clearance.

4. Measure the distance from the garage door opening to the back wall of the garage called the backroom. You will need backroom equal to the door height plus 18 inches, possibly more based on opener installation.

How to Professionally Measure a Replacement Garage Door Spring

Inside your garage, measure the clearance between the side of each opening and the cross wall or, if you have multiple doors side by side, between door openings. Each side of the opening should have a clearance of at least 4 for a 2 track, and 6 for a 3 track.

If there is a column or any other type of obstacle between two rough openings, measure the distance from the opening of each door to the obstacle.

If there is an access door next to your garage door, measure the height of the access door as well as the distance between the rough opening and the wall of the access door.

If your garage has multiple garage door openings side by side, measure the distance between the doors and the distance on each side to the left and right walls.

Clearances that are too narrow, like in these photos, will make installing your new garage door much more complex. It is important to take these side measurements properly and speak to a Garex expert before ordering your new door. The latter will be able to advise you or find viable solutions before you make an investment.

How To Measure Your Garage For A Door

Measuring your garage to find the right garage door size is probably one of the least appealing aspects of buying a new garage door, but it can be simple. Heres what you need to do:

  • Get a tape measure to measure the width of your garage door opening. Measure from the inside, horizontally from left to right. Take note to see if the opening on either side is in any way irregular, rather than a level and uniform side from top to bottom.

Even if you dont see any irregularities, measure from a few different locations along the side of the garage door to make sure you have the right number. If you have a two-car garage and you get a measurement far from the standard 15 feet or 16 feet, you may want to measure again.

  • Measure the height of the door opening, starting from the highest point and going down to the floor. You should come up with a number around 7 feet.
  • Take a few other measurements for installation purposes. This includes the width between the opening for the garage door and the actual side of your garage, the headroom , and the ceiling itself .
  • These measurements could inform some important decisions such as whether you need extension springs or torsion springs as part of your garage door opening mechanism.
