What Types Of Mouse Traps Work Best In The Garage
My favorite mouse traps for the garage are the ones that provide a quick kill. I like to set two different types of mousetraps in my garage: electric and snap traps. And often I will just use the electric mouse traps.
Electric traps are nice in the garage since they are enclosed and in my opinion, are one of the safest to use near the entrance from the garage to the house.
When I take the dog to the park, we go through the garage to get to the car. And I dont want her accidentally setting off a snap trap. Ive always used the Victor electric traps shown below.
However, snap traps are the gold standard for catching mice. They are fast, effective, and inexpensive. So depending on the level of mouse activity, I will supplement with a few extra snap traps.
I like to set the snap traps behind the furniture or places where Im unlikely to set them off. Behind the refrigerator and workbench are the two places mice hide in my garage.
I use a whole range of snap trap brands, depending on the latest deal since I like to buy them in bulk.
If you dont have pets or children in the home, you may also choose to use bait stations in lieu of the electric mouse traps.

Try A Hot Pepper Solution
Poison baits may seem like an easy solution, but they can also be risky. Poison can sicken pets and children in your home, so its safer to stick with nonpoisonous baits and treatments. Try a concentrated hot pepper solution. Spray it in spots out of the reach of children and pets, but where mice frequently visit, such as under the stove or behind cabinets.
How To Prevent Mice In A Garage
Preventing mice in a garage is largely a matter of denying them their nesting and hiding areas eliminating food and water sources and plugging and blocking any cracks, holes, or crevices that allow them to enter. Begin your efforts at prevention by first trapping or baiting any mice already in the garage. At the same time, begin to declutter your garage and seal holes.
The reality is that mice will usually find a way into a garage, and preventing them usually means some form of ongoing seasonal effort. In colder climates, mice will be particularly troublesome during the fall, as the rodents begin to seek warm dark areas to overwinter.

Remove Food Or Store It Correctly
Storing food correctly is pivotal to your success in keeping mice out of your garage!
I said it above, and I will say it here too. Store food in strong metal or glass containers. Mice can chew through tons of items, but these are difficult, if not impossible.
If you are unable to store food correctly, remove it from your garage.
I am not talking about just human food. If you store pet food or bird food in your garage, then you should be storing that correctly too.
How Can I Get Rid Of The Mice In My Garage On My Own
There are several dos and donts of mouse elimination if you are going to try mouse control on your own.
Close off gaps- Use caulk and steel wool to fill in small holes and gaps leading into the garage.
Clean up your garage– Grass seed and dog food strewn around the garage is an endless buffet for mice.
– Dont keep items in cardboard boxes. Use sealed containers and bins. If there is more floor space open, you have fewer hiding places and a better chance of finding potential nesting spots.
Cut back bushes and plants– By trimming back vegetation that comes into contact with the foundation of your garage, mice will have less space to hide and gather.
X Use sound machines or ultrasonic repellers– They have been proven time and time again to be ineffective.
X Rely on essential oils or scents– Mice are highly adaptable and arent deterred by a little bit of peppermint oil when they find a goldmine of bird seed in your garage.
X Trust your cat– Yes, cats can catch mice. However, its not a reliable form of pest control when mice are multiplying and infesting.
X Cover your garage in cayenne pepper– Our pest control technicians run into this issue a lot. They are called to a home that has droppings everywhere, including on and around cayenne pepper that was used as a natural barrier. If it was this easy to get rid of mice, pest control companies would be out of business.

Why do Mice Love Garages?
A garage is full of anything from tools, boxes, summer toys, bicycles and more, which makes it the perfect place for any mouse to hide. And because mice can produce large litters in a short period of time, it is best to address an infestation of mice in garage immediately.
How to Get Rid of Mice in Garage:
Mice can squeeze through a crack or hole the size of a nickel. Sealing any cracks in your foundation, doors or walls is the most effective way to humanely deal with mice in garage.
We recommend against using poisonous baits to eradicate any mice in garage, as its usually a high traffic area for family and pets which might put them in danger. Although mothballs are known to keep mice away, they are also very toxic and without supervision can end up in a child or dogs mouth, causing serious illness, or in some cases death.

When All Else Fails Call An Exterminator
Everyone has their own threshold for what they can put up with until they ask for help. If you get to the point of needing a professional, ask your friends and neighbors if they have any recommendations, whether you’re looking for someone who can aggressively and effectively get the job done or an exterminator who will offer up a more humane approach. Expect to spend between $150 and $250 for treatment, depending on the size of your home and the extent of the outbreak.
We do not recommend bombs or foggers of any kind, since they are hazardous to people and often not very effective.
And always check an exterminator’s credentials before hiring. “Ask the pro if they’re licensed by the state and if they’re a member of a state or national association,” says Mannes. “Those folks are usually taking the time to be credentialed properly, and they’re learning the latest techniques for treatment.”

Strategically Set Bait Stations
If mice have already made your warm garage their new living arrangement, the most effective way to get rid of them is to set up a bait station. To get the job done, youll need to strategically place enough of these in places where mice will find them.
A quick primer on mouse behavior will help. Mice are creatures of habit they wont look for new food sources unless they absolutely have to. They also have terrible eyesight, so when mice go out of the nest for food, they stick close to walls, corners, pipes, and beams. Wherever you see mice droppings, rub marks or other signs of activity, thats a good place to put bait stations.
Place reusable bait stations, like the Tomcat® Mouse Killer Refillable Bait Station – Advanced Formula, 8 to 12 feet apart, reading and following all label instructions. Check them often, once or twice daily. And remember mice like fresh food. If theres old bait in the station, replace it with a new bait block for at least 15 days, or until youre sure youve gotten rid of the problem. To lure in even more mice, move the bait stations to new locations where mice activity is suspected.
No matter which bait station you use, make sure its suitable for outdoor use and keep it away from kids or pets. Always wear gloves when handling these devices this will help keep your scent off the bait, making it more attractive to mice.

How Can I Keep Mice Out Of My House Or Repel Them
Placing a little peppermint oil on several cotton balls and placing them around your house is a great way for how to repel mice. You can put the cotton balls in places where mice are gaining entry into your home and in your kitchen cabinets to keep them away. You can also plant mint around the exterior of your house to keep them away from your home.
Option Three: The Circle Of Life
If relocating your mice isnt really an option, or if its a recurring problem, it might be worth adopting a cat. Cats make excellent family pets, and their presence is an active deterrent to rodents. Mice tend to avoid nesting in areas where they know active predators are present, but its important to remember that cats are simply a deterrent and not a solution to why you might have pests. Having a cat can be a wonderful addition to your family, but if youre not ready for the commitment of a pet, its better to revisit the preventative solutions.

Rats are larger in size. They can weigh close to 11 ounces compared to the half-ounce of a mouse. Rats can live for 2-3 years in the wild and around four years if kept as a pet.
