How To Choose A Garage Door

Haas Door – Ease of Selecting a Garage Door

There are numerous types of garage doors that homeowners can choose from. While the most common type is a sectionala door with hinged panels that rolls over a trackthere are also retractable, tilt-up, and roll-up styles available.

There are other specifications, such as material, to consider as well. If you live in a colder climate, you might want to get an insulated garage door, as these can make a significant difference in your overall energy consumption and save you money on bills.

Insulation is graded using a system called an R-value. A regular non-insulated garage door has an R-value of 0. Insulated garage doors generally have an R-value between 5 and 10. The higher the R-value, the more insulating ability the material has.

Here are a few considerations when choosing a new garage door:

  • Think about your needs: If you want something low-maintenance, choose a steel garage door over a material like wood that can require frequent painting or refinishing.
  • Consider your climate: Do you need a garage door that can stand up to the elements or provide additional insulation?
  • Remember aesthetic: If you want a new garage door to add curb appeal to your home, choosing a style that matches the aesthetic of your home is important.
  • Factor in budget: If you have a limited budget, its best to buy a standard door. If youve got more to invest, there are lots of customization options to choose from.

Paint Color Matching Program

This is a nifty feature!

You can paint your front door, shutters, or your homes exterior trim to match your garage door with the Haas color match program. Heres how you do it:

*All of the Haas garage door colors are available through Sherwin Williams. Download the Hass color codes, and Sherwin Williams will mix the paint to match your garage door.

Aluminum Garage Doors Prices

Aluminum garage doors cost $250 to $2,000. Aluminum is low-maintenance and rust-resistant, even in humid climates. However, it dents easily and insulates poorly. Since aluminum is lighter than steel, it strains the garage door springs less, making the springs last longer.

Pros & Cons

  • Customizable with special paint or embossed-design choices
  • Works well for wider garage doors
  • Not a good wind-resistant option for hurricane-prone areas

Is There A Standard Size Garage Door

Single garage doors are often 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall with double car garages 16 feet by 7 feet. A custom sized garage door is not more expensive than what many call standard size doors. The benefit of working with Dodds is that all garage doors are built to your custom specification. There are very few sizes that we cant make.

Picking The Garage Door Insulation Value

We knew we wanted a high R-value door. We had figured out that aluminum was too hot, and wood was too vulnerable .

So we set out to find the steel door design and color we wanted. Then we would choose the best-insulated door from that set.

We mostly gravitated toward Clopay doors, but the Haas doors looked pretty nice as well. We considered various shades of gray when we realized the obvious: its impossible to match the garage door color to the house. Theyre going to fade at different rates, so even matched colors will not match after a while. So we chose bright white, which we still really love.

Picking The Garage Door Springs Brand And Warranty

921 haas carbon black garage doors | 630-271-9343

The carpenter was really enthusiastic about the Haas doors he recently installed. We got a quote for the American Traditions, a 13.45 R-value carriage house design also known as Model 921. The quote included 2 doors, 2 controllers, a keypad, 2 remotes, old garage removal, new garage door delivery installation.

We also liked the very similar C.H.I. 5800, also called the Steel Overlay Carriage House garage door. It had a 17.92 R-value, and the option to upgrade the springs from 10,000 to 30,000 expected life cycles . The upgrade also got us powder coating on all of the exposed metal. Both doors had a limited lifetime warranty against rust, and 3 to 5-year parts warranties.

We paid about 10% more for the C.H.I. over the Haas, and in exchange we got the upgraded springs and powder coated rails. This was the difference between $5274 and $5774. Our thinking was, lets just get the best, so 10 years from now we arent waiting on a cold winter morning for the garage repairman to replace the springs.

Garage Door Cost Factors

There are several factors that impact the cost of a garage door. These can range from labor and supplies to geographic location. Below are some of the most common cost factors.

  • Single or double door: The larger the door you need for your garage, the more costly it will be.
  • Installation: Cost of installation can be affected by a number of things, such as where you live, whether you need to remove the old door, and any upgrades or accessories you select. Custom features and add-ons can quickly add up.
  • Manual versus automatic doors: Automatic doors often come with additional costs for things like a keypad, sensors, and other mechanical parts. Manual doors have fewer parts, making them less expensive.
