An Overview On Garage Door Openers

Without a garage door opener, youd have to manually lift the door every time you needed access, which would be especially annoying if you parked your car in there. A garage door opener is a modern convenience many people take for granted. If your home has an opener already, chances are it was already there when you bought the house. But you dont have to wait until it malfunctions to replace it. In fact, you may find that you can upgrade to a quieter, more efficient model that offers capabilities you dont currently have.

If youve decided you need a new garage door opener, though, where do you start?

Determining horsepower should be the first step in picking out a garage door opener, says Vicki Liston, our home improvement expert and the host of On The FlyDIY, an award-winning show with unique project tutorials. Too much HP and you are wasting a lot of money. Too little and you run the risk of tearing up the motor. The goal is to find the right balance.

She suggests that you may need just 1/3 HP for lightweight single-car garage doors. Light-weight double-car garage doors work most efficiently with 1/2 HP. If you have a door made with a heavier material such as wood, try 3/4, 1 or even 1 1/4 HP or HPc . Basically, the weight and size of your door determine your power needs.

Once youve decided about drive type, its time to delve into the optional features, which make buying a garage door opener a bit more fun.

How To Get Alexa To Control My Gocontrol Garage Door Opener

GoControl/Linear GD00Z Z

For some reason, altho it shows up in the Echo app, I cant control my opener through the app or my Echo devices all it does is show status. Now that I have an Echo in the garage it would be really handy to be able to tell it to open or close the door. The best idea Ive had is to great a virtual switch in ST, have Alexa turn the switch off and on, and then create an ST routine that controls the door based on the virtual switch. Of course this will only work if the Echo can control the virtual switch. Anybody know if this will work, or have a better idea for how to do this?

You pinned it. Thatll work. Just make sure to toggle back the VS a few seconds later. Or do a momentary switch.

OK so I did try making the virtual switch and it shows up in the Echo app. Looks like I can make a routine that will respond to it and open or close the garage door. Ill test this when I get home. Why do I need to toggle the VS?

Why do I need to toggle the VS?

Lets say that turning the VS on opens the garage. If someone manually closes the garage, your VS will still be on- and that will mess you up on future uses. Better to create routine for if VS changes to ON, open the garage, and then have the VS turn off so its ready for next use. For closing, use a second VS.

You all are trying too hard. I have mine controlled and it works quite well. I use the classic app on android.

In the App, Go to My Home and then tap on your garage door.

Gocontrol Garage Door Opener

Im running into some trouble with my GoControl Garage Door opener. It had previously worked with an old garage door. I bought a new door, the installers didn’t hook up the GoControl. It’s a simple device to connect so I thought no big deal. Now I’m close to adding it to the drawer of shame, but decided to ask the community for suggestions before doing so. Ive copied the device log entries below.

Using generic z-wave driver, this is the log messages when I hit open on the device page.

Go Control Garage Door Opener

Hello

I only get the correct status of my garage door if i tap the refresh button on the classic smartthings app. Once i tap refresh the correct status is reported. Opening and closing the garage door work just fine. It seems like the status should refresh automatically on the app. Any help is appreciated.

Alix

Has it ever worked? Have you recently put fresh batteries in your gocontrols tilt sensor?

It is working in the sense that once i tap the refresh button on the smartthings app the correct status of the garage door is reported. If i dont tap the refresh button the status is never reported: if the garage door is open , it will say closed until i tap refresh. I will try new battery.

  • verify you have fresh batteries in the sensor. Then cycle the door to get it to update.

  • if that doesnt work you may have a ZWave connectivity issue, try a ZWave repair and / or add a repeater.

    What Is Z

Z-Wave is the international wireless protocol for communication in the Smart Home. This device is suited for use in the region mentioned in the Quickstart section.

Z-Wave ensures a reliable communication by reconfirming every message and every mains powered node can act as a repeater for other nodes in case the receiver is not in direct wireless range of the transmitter.

This device and every other certified Z-Wave device can be used together with any other certified Z-Wave device regardless of brand and origin as long as both are suited for the same frequency range.

If a device supports secure communication it will communicate with other devices secure as long as this device provides the same or a higher level of security. Otherwise it will automatically turn into a lower level of security to maintain backward compatibility.
