Garage Door Opener Remote Troubleshooting Tips

Most of the time, when a remote control stops working, its because the battery has died.

Depending on the model you have, your Genie remote control may take a AAA battery, AA battery, or lithium coin battery. The three-button remote included with most new Genie models take a 2032 lithium coin battery. Heres how to replace it:

  • Disassemble the remote by inserting a flat screwdriver into the slot at the end of it then carefully prying open the housing.
  • Remove the touch pad to access the circuit board.
  • Flip the circuit board to get access to the battery compartment.
  • Using a screwdriver, carefully push the battery out of the compartment.
  • Replace with a new 2032 lithium coin battery.
  • Reassemble the remote by replacing the circuit board and touch pad, then carefully snapping the housing back into place.
  • If the battery isnt the issue, try reprogramming the remote, following the steps outlined above. You could also refer to the owners manual for the remote control for more troubleshooting advice. If you cant resolve the problem yourself, call in a garage door technician to handle it.

    A qualified garage door technician will be able to fix any issues that arise with your keypad or wall console.

    Programming 971lm And 973lm 371lm And 373lm Security Plus Transmitters

  • Press and release the square colored smart button on garage door opener motor unit. The smart indicator light will glow steadily for 30 seconds. The 971LM and 973LM remotes have a corresponding amber or red, square, learn button. The 371LM and 373LM have a corresponding purple, square, learn button. Learn buttons are located on the motor head near the terminal strip for wire connections.
  • Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the hand-held remote.
  • release the button when the motor unit light blinks. It has learned the code. If light bulbs are not installed, two clicks will be heard.

    If the garagedoor opener remote control doesn’t work, try changing the battery. You can ususally remove the screw out of the back of the hand-held remote control to access the battery.

    Programming Instructions For Genie Remotes:

    Programming Genie Intellicode Remote Transmitters

  • Gently press and release the Receiver Learn Code button on the power head receiver of your door operator. This small, black, unmarked button is located behind the light lens at the motor head and is nearest the floppy 6 inch antenna wire that protrudes from the motor head. When pressed, a radio signal indicator light will start blinking red for 30 seconds. **
  • After pressing the Learn Code Button once, press your transmitter button three times for your system to grab the frequency and code it in.
  • Press the transmitter button once more to test the system and start your door moving.
  • **To erase all Intellicode remotes and wireless keyless entry, hold down on the learn button until the indicator light stops blinking, then proceed to Step 1.

    For Genie IntelliG, TriloG, SilentMax, PowerMax, GPower, and PowerLift Series Openers

    These include models 4024, 3024, 4042, 3042, 4022, 3022, and 4064, 3064, 4062, 3062, 2564, 2562. Looking up in your garage at the bottom of your Genie motor cover is a set of black buttons, depicted in the drawing below, along with two LED lights shown here in grey.

  • Press and hold down the square button on the motor head until the round blue LED light come on, then release the square button.
  • The long purple LED button will start to blink.
  • While the long LED is blinking, hold the remote 4 or 5 feet away and press 3, 4 or 5 times, until the door activates. Your remote is now programmed.

  • SLIDE OPEN BOTTOM FRONT OF REMOTE TRANSMITTER TO EXPOSE DIP SWITCHES AND PROGRAM BUTTON.
  • MATCH THE DIP SWITCH SETTINGS WITH THE SETTINGS ON AN EXISTING REMOTE OR ON THE RECEIVER SETTING LOCATED ON THE CEILING. LOOK FOR THE FLOPPY ANTENNA WIRE TO FIND THE RECEIVER.
  • PRESS THE PROGRAM BUTTON ON THE REMOTE TRANSMITTER UNTIL THE LED LIGHTS UP.
  • SELECT ONE OF THE TWO REMOTE TRANSMITTER BUTTONS THAT YOU INTEND TO USE FOR OPENING THE DOOR.
  • PRESS THIS BUTTON THE NUMBER OF TIMES SHOWN ON THE CHART, BASED ON THE BRAND AND NUMBER OF DIP SWITCHES LISTED IN DESCRIPTION. CODE IS ACCEPTED WHEN DOOR ACTIVATES.
  • PRESS THE PROGRAM BUTTON ON THE REMOTE TRANSMITTER TO TURN OFF THE PROGRAMMING MODE.
  • PROGRAM IS COMPLETE. PRESS SELECTED BUTTON TO TEST.

    Programming a Genie wall console is very simple. Just follow these two steps:

    Programming A Genie Keypad

    These instructions are for linking a Genie keypad with a Genie opener for a single garage door. If youre linking the keypad to more than one garage door, the process will be different. Refer to the keypad owners manual for instructions.

    To program your Genie keypad, follow these three steps:

  • Connect the keypad to the Genie opener:
  • Enter, in order, the numbers 3-5-7, then press the large up/down button.
  • Press and hold the PRGM/SET button until the small, round LED light starts flashing red.
  • Enter, in order, 3-5-7, then press the PRGM/SET button.
  • Enter a pin that is three to eight numbers in length.
  • Press the PRGM/SET button.
  • Pair the keypad and opener:
  • Press and hold the PRGM/SET button. The round LED light will turn blue and then turn off. The long LED light will begin to flash purple.
  • Enter your pin, then press the up/down button. The long LED light will turn purple.
  • Press the up/down button again. The purple LED light will turn off.
  • Press the up/down button for a third time. The garage door will open.
  • The keypad is now ready to use. When you put in the code and press the up/down button, the garage door will open. Note that after you open or close the door with the keypad, you can cause the door to stop and reverse by pressing any button while the doors still in motion.

    Programming A Genie Remote Control

    To program your Genie remote, youll need to do the following two things:

  • Press and hold the square PRGM/SET button on your opener for two seconds. The small, round LED light will turn blue, then the long LED light will flash purple.
  • Standing at least five feet from the opener, slowly press and release the remote button youve chosen to use. Repeat this action: slowly press and release the button. Both LED lights on the opener will flash then turn off, indicating that the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Once youve done this, test your remote. The garage door should now open and close when you press the button.

    Note that you have 30 seconds to perform each step. If the LED lights on the opener flash red, it means that youve run out of time and will have to repeat the step.

    In addition, note that any remote controls that come included with a Genie opener have already been programmed and are ready for use following the installation of the opener. The above instructions are for remote controls that have been purchased separately or that need to be re-programmed.
