High Lift And Vertical Lift Conversions

Garage door setup. Spring tensioner tools fabrication.

To learn more about how these systems work, see our How Vertical-Lift and High-Lift Doors Work page. If you are interested in the work involved when performing a high-lift conversion, check out our High-Lift Garage Door Conversion tutorial.

If you are interested in converting your standard lift garage door to a high-lift door, please find the dimensions specified in the High-Lift Garage Door Conversion tutorial and fill out the form on our Garage Door High Lift & Vertical Lift Inquiry page. After filling out the form, you will see options for the spring cycle life for your conversion kit and the total cost we will then contact you to complete your order.

Custom roofline lift conversion kits are also available. Most of these doors travel vertically for a foot or two before reaching the curved part of the horizontal track. Rather than rolling back parallel to the garage floor, the door instead continues to roll back and upward, following the pitch of the ceiling. This option is only available for garages with ceilings that pitch up and away from the door. These conversion kits are also available – visit our Garage Door High Lift & Vertical Lift Inquiry page to receive a quote for a custom roofline high-lift kit.

If you have enough space in your garage for your door to open vertically and are instead interested in a custom vertical-lift conversion kit, please contact us so we can determine the parts you need and the cost of your new kit.

What is a balanced garage door?

Clamp The Door To The Track

Clamp a locking pliers or a C-clamp to the track just above one of the rollers. This will prevent the door from shooting up and breaking your nose when you wind the new springs during an overhead garage door repair. Also yank the cord and unplug the garage door opener before you start any garage door spring repair.

Determine The Hand Of The Spring

View the end of each spring to determine its wind direction, or âhand.â If the end of the spring is pointing up on the right, it’s a right-hand wind. If the end is pointing up on the left, it’s a left-hand wind. Doors with two springs will always have a left- and a right-hand spring.

Provided you know how to adjust garage door springs, youll be able to solve this problem on your own. But whether youve got a simple fix on your hands or a complex one depends on the style of door you have. As, depending on the door you are using, it may have one of two types of springs.

Before we move ahead and shed light on them, we recommend you watch this video. Play It Super Safe When Doing Garage Door Spring Repair

  • NEVER use screwdrivers, pin punches or pliers handles to wind or unwind a torsion spring. Trust us: This is the best way to wind up in the hospital. Don’t even think about doing this job without a proper set of winding bars. You can buy a set of professional hardened-steel winding bars for about $25 from online suppliers. Professional winding bars work with 1/2-in. and 7/16-in. winding cones. If your winding cones have 1/2-in. openings, you can make your own winding bars by cutting a 36-in. length of 1/2-in.-diameter round bar stock in half . Just file a smooth bevel on each end so it slides into the winding cone holes easier.
  • Position your ladder to the side of the spring ends so you’re never directly in front of the spring cones when they’re winding or unwinding.
  • Keep the garage door opener disconnected from power at all times, and lock the door in the lowered position, especially when you’re winding the springs.
  • Wear eye protection and leather gloves throughout the garage door spring replacement project.
  • Step off the ladder and move it off to the side before unclamping the door and testing the balance. Never test a door while you’re standing on the ladder. Step 2

Garage Door Torsion Spring

Torsion Springs are the main concept of opening and closing the garage door. Torsion springs are mounted on a metal shaft above the garage door. When the garage door is pulled down, the cables that are attached to the bottom corners of the garage doors force the torsion spring to wind up. When the door is up position, the spring is mostly unwound.

How To Adjust Spring Tension

Garage door springs are first wound to the nominal tension. The tension is then fine-tuned to have the door open and close easily. You may want to disconnect the door opener arm to avoid it interfering with the tuning.

1 TENSION. Wind the springs to the nominal tension indicated in the table. This is very close to the right tension.

2 TEST. Carefully try to operate the door. Check that the door

  • Stays in the fully closed position
  • Is light to lift
  • Stays in the fully open position
  • Is light to pull down

3 FINE-TUNE. Make small changes to tension with these rules:

  • Door was heavy to lift -> Increase tension
  • Door did not open fully -> Increase tension
  • Door did not close fully -> Decrease tension
  • Door was heavy to pull down -> Decrease tension

NB. Adjust tension only by ½ turn either way. Going looser risks cable lifting off the drum going tighter risks premature spring failure.

Begin To Tighten Torsion Spring

The torsion spring’s winding cone is always tightened or loosened in quarter-turns. To do so, raise the lower winding bar upward by a quarter turn until the winding bar is parallel with the garage ceiling. While still firmly holding that winding bar, insert the other winding bar into the winding cone’s bottom hole.

How To Adjust Side

Now you can proceed directly to the roller door spring tension adjustment and installation process. So, how to adjust side-mounted garage door springs? Lets look at 6 simple steps.

  • Open the garage door. First, free the springs from any pressure and open either manual or electric garage door as much as possible.
  • Fix the garage door. Ensure that the gate wont fall when you adjust its springs. You can place a C-clamp under the bottom roller that will keep it stock-still.
  • Remove the spring hook. Detach the spring hook to regulate the tension.
  • Regulate the spring tension. If the door does not close chock-a-block, reduce the tension. And if the gate opens or closes too easily, enhance the tension. How to increase tension on a garage door spring? Attach the spring to the higher hole on the track. If the door closes unevenly, reduce the tension on the side where the gap is.
  • Fix the cable tension. To increase safety cables, shorten them, tightening the knot to reduce their tension, lengthen cables, weakening the node.
  • Check the door & smear the springs. Test the door. If it works as expected, lubricate the springs.

For quality check, control, and adjustment of garage door springs, contact the STI Garage Door specialists. Use the advanced services and adjust garage door extension springs qualitatively and securely.

Detach The Spring Hook

As you try to remove the spring hook, you will notice that a large hook is attaching it to the track hanger. This bigger hook, in turn, is secured in its place with a nut. Youll need an adjustable wrench to remove the nut and, by extension, the spring hook.

The reason why were asking you to remove the spring hook is that it is responsible for maintaining the tension in the spring. Once you have removed it, youll be able to move it to a higher or lower hole to increase or decrease the tension.

Garage door springs offset the weight of the door and allow it to open and close with ease. A problem with the spring tension could cause the door to open or close unevenly, improperly, or at the wrong speed, and adjusting the springs will likely solve the problem. Garage doors come in different styles that use two different types of springs, and whether you’ve got an easy fix on your hands or a more difficult and dangerous task will depend on what style of door you have. You may be better off seeking the services of a professional if your door has torsion springs, especially if you don’t have the proper tools, have no experience, or lack a mechanical background.XExpert SourceHandymanExpert Interview. 20 August 2020.

Adjust The Cables Tension

As stated earlier, extension springs come with safety cables. You may have to increase or decrease the tension of the cable alongside that of the spring to resolve the problem.

If you need to increase the cables tension, shorten it slightly by tightening the knot attaching it to the spring. If you need to decrease its tension, lengthen it by loosening the knot.

Measure The Inner Diameter And Length

Measure the inner diameter of the broken spring as shown. Loosen the setscrews on the broken spring and slide the broken portion over to meet the stationary section. Measure the overall length of the springs .

Most home centers don’t carry all the replacement parts you’ll need for garage door spring replacement, and most garage door service companies won’t sell you springs. So you may have to order the parts online and wait for the shipment to arrive. Garagedoorpartsusa.com and stardoorparts.com are two online sources . First, inspect the condition of your cables and brackets. If you see any frayed strands on the cables or rust on the bottom brackets, replace them now before they fail. Bottom brackets cost about $15 per set. Premium-quality cables last much longer than economy cables and cost only about $4 more. So it’s smart to buy the better cables for about $12 per set.

Standard torsion springs have a service life of 7,000 to 10,000 open/close cycles. However, you can buy double-life replacement springs for about $65 per spring. If you have a two-spring setup and one spring breaks, the second spring will break soon. So replace them both at the same time. To get the right springs for your door, you’ll have to provide the supplier some details. Here’s how:

Attach Locking Pliers To Torsion Tube

How to wind a garage door torsion spring with one finger!

Around 18 to 24 inches away from the torsion spring, attach a large pair of locking pliers to the torsion tube. Turn the pliers’ adjustment screw so that the pliers are firmly attached and in no danger of slipping, but not so tight as to deform the tube. The pliers’ handle must rest against the garage door header . If the pliers are too long to fit, the handle can alternatively rest against the garage ceiling.
