Sensors for garage doors are intricate and often quite expensive gadgets. So they must be carefully maintained. But how can you tell if your garage sensor needs to be replaced?

If your garage door doesn’t close, regardless of how hard you press the buttons on the remote control or the door itself, this may be a sign that your garage door sensors are damaged or aren’t working properly. Even if the garage door starts to close, it will stop in the middle and return to the open position or become stuck halfway through opening or closing.

The requirement for a new sensor might not always be the case. Sometimes, all they need is a good cleaning because they gather dirt over time. Simply use a soft cloth to wipe the garage door sensors routinely.

To Replace Your Safety Sensors Follow The Below Simple Steps

  • Wear your work gloves in order to protect your hands from any harm.
  • Unplug the garage door opener or you can opt to turn off the house circuit breaker of the garage door opener.
  • Remove the wing nut from the safety sensor.
  • Pull the sensor from the bracket.
  • Cut the wires about an inch from the safety sensor, leaving enough slack in the control wire to connect the new sensor.
  • Connect the black striped safety sensor wire using the crimp wire nut.
  • Connect the solid white wires in the same way.
  • Slide the safety sensor into its bracket and secure it with a wire nut.
  • Repeat the process for the other safety sensor.
  • Plug in the garage door opener or turn on the house circuit breaker of the garage door opener.
  • Align the safety sensors so that the green indicator light on the receiving sensor glows steadily.
  • Place a box or similar object between the safety beams to block the sensing beam.
  • Attempt to close the garage door using a remote.
  • The door should stay open and the motor unit lights should blink.
  • If the garage door opener closes the door with the safety sensors blocked, replace the logic board.

Sunlight Affecting The Sensors

As one of my YouTube viewers pointed out, if you have direct sunlight hitting one of the sensors, which can occur at certain times of day throughout the year, it can prevent the infrared light from connecting properly between the sensors. They were able to resolve it by placing a piece of cardboard between the sensor and the open garage door, which shaded the lens to block the direct sunlight.

Before we dive into the why, lets briefly review how garage safety sensors operate. The main component of the safety sensor is called the photo eye reversal system, or safety eyes. These two lenses are affixed to the garage door tracks on opposite sides, just about six inches above the ground, and connect to the garage door openers motor.

The concept is simple. A tiny laser beam is constantly shooting between the two sensors. If anything breaks that beam, the garage door will reverse course and start to ascend until the obstruction is removed and the door is promoted to close again. But however intuitive and clever these sensors are, the photo-eye reversal sensors have been known to malfunction rather often. The good news is, most homeowners can resolve the issue on their own or with the help of a licensed garage door technician.

Federal law requires that the safety sensors on your garage door are working at all times, and for good reason. Garage doors can be dangerous not only to small animals but also to children. If your garage door safety sensors arent working properly, you may think that you need to start looking for a new garage door in Las Vegas. However, there could be a quick fix for your problem.   • Check the yellow light on the sending safety sensor.

    If the yellow light turns on, then you know that the sending sensor is okay.

    Next, add the receiving sensor and its wiring to the test.

  • Remove the receiving sensor from its door rail bracket and disconnect or cut the sensor wire about 1 foot from the sensor end.

    There are a few reasons why a opener sensor may not be working properly. Sensors usually have indicator lights to to show their status.

    The sending eye indicator light shows it has power from the opener unit. The receiving eye indicator light shows if it is aligned properly with the sending eye.

    Here are things to check before calling a opener repair person.

    • Look for spider webs over the sensors.
    • Check for proper sensor alignment. Someone may have accidentally bumped one of the sensors out of alignment.
    • Check for loose wire connections on the motor unit.
    • Check for loose wire connections near the sensors.

    Since the sensors use low voltage, sometimes the wires are improperly connected near the sensors. Some installers may twist the wires together and use electrical tape to cover them . If a connection like this fails, it should be reconnected with wire connectors. Small blue or gray twist connectors work well.

The control inside the motor unit flashes the troubleshooting LED a number of times to indicate the cause of a failure. You may see one of these error codes related to the safety sensors on a common chain-drive garage door opener:

    • 1 blinkSensor wires are disconnected
    • 2 blinksSensor wires are shorted

    Check the safety sensor wiring connections on the motor unit. A loose wiring connection could prevent the garage door opener from closing the door, causing an error code. Reconnect any loose wires.
