However, like any mechanical product, issues may arise with the wall switch controlling your garage door opener after years of use. The malfunction often lies with either the wall switch or your remote control when encountered by a garage door wont open with wall switch problem.

How Does A Garage Door Wall Switch Work

The wall switch should open and close the garage door without the remote control. When the wall switch button is pressed, it sends a command signal to the door opener to raise or lower the door. The signal from the wall button goes to the Logic board, which sends the command to the capacitor. The capacitor jump-starts the motor, which turns the gear and the sprocket. The sprocket turns the chain or the belt that holds the door by pulling the trolley. The travel limit set in the opener will tell the motor when to stop during the opening or closing of the garage door.

Garage Door Opener Wall Buttons Will Flash When The Opener Is Placed In Lock

MARANTEC Garage Door Opener Wall Control Panel 89463 M3

The garage door opener flashing wall button is completely different from or the motor head LED light flashing.

The constantly flashing wall button simply means that the door was either put into lock-out mode by someone using the wall panel control or for some reason it defaulted into lock-out mode in error. When the garage door opener is locked-out the transmitters will be disabled from opening the door but the wall button will still function as usual.

Some older openers used to have a vacation switch for this purpose & this is just the newer version of that same operation. The theory is that if you are going away on vacation or have a security issue the garage door can not be opened by an outside radio signal. Although if you go away on vacation you will want to make sure you have a key to another door into the house or otherwise you will be locked out of your own house when you get back home.

If you have a 3-button wall panel you simply push & hold the lock button for approx 10 seconds until the LED quits flashing. Therefore if someone pushes & holds the lock button by mistake while trying to open the door this function will be turned on. To place the unit in lock-out you simply hold the same lock button again for approx 10 seconds until the LED starts flashing again.

Testing The Wiring Of Wall Consoles With An Led Light

When compared to the former, this type of test is considered much more easy and feasible. Here is all you need to do

  • Detach the wall control unit from the wall and then disengage the wires linking the wall control at the back.
  • This is the test step. Bring the bare ends of the disconnected wall console wires into contact and observe whether the garage door moves. There are also two possible outcomes
    • The movement of the garage door is indicative of proper wiring. The problem does not lie with the wiring since the motor recognized the connection after you brought the bare ends into contact. In that case, replacement of the wall console unit would be best.
    • Failure of the garage door to move suggests that the issue rises from the wiring. Here is how you can test the wiring
  • Disengage the wires from the motor.
  • Create a jumper wire by cutting a piece of insulated 3 strand wire followed by stripping 1/2 of insulation off either end.
  • To observe whether the door will move, slip the jumper wire into the wall console terminals located on the motor. There are two possible outcomes
    • If the garage door moves, you can interpret that as breakage in the wall control wiring. Wire replacement can resolve this issue.
    • If the garage door fails to move, a defective logic board is the most probable candidate in this case. To correct this, you will need to replace the board.
