Locate The Learn Button
Locate the Learn button on the garage door opener. Most probably it will be on the back side. Press the button for a few seconds and then release it.
Once youve done that, youll see that the button will light up for half-a-minute. Dont do anything as the button keeps glowing. Wait for the light to die down.
Check The Color Of Learn Button Or Number Of Dip Switches On The Motor
In order to program the remote for the door, youll be using the Learn Button or Dip Switch. Your motor unit will have either of these two options. The Learn or Smart button is usually below the motor light. Its a square button that could be green, red, yellow, or purple. It might also be labeled learn .Usually, most universal remotes wont be compatible with a door opener with a yellow circular, smart button. That means that an opener is a guardian unit.

Who Makes Craftsman Garage Door Openers
Garage door openers have become a fundamental device in households. These mechanical devices that allow you to open garage doors automatically have become better due to technological advancements. If youre thinking of getting a garage door opener, Craftsman is one of the brands to consider. You can only get these garage door openers in Sears outlets. One of the popular options is Craftsman garage door openers.
Although Craftsman carries the Sears brand, the Chamberlain Group manufactured it until 2018, when Guardian took over. The Chamberlain Group is the largest manufacturer of automatic garage doors, with brands such LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Merlin, MyQ, Grifco, etc., all under it. However, it manufactured and rebranded its Craftsman products for Sears.

Why Genuine Parts Matter

Unfortunately, many garage door parts offered for sale online are actually low-quality counterfeits. Even some sellers that seem reputable are selling knock-off, counterfeit products in order to keep their costs and their prices lower than the competition.
At GenieDoor.com, we stand behind all of our products as we have since 1964 at our local stores. We ONLY sell genuine parts that come directly from the original manufacturer. Those parts are guaranteed to meet exacting quality standards, and are eligible for all manufacturer warranties. At GenieDoor.com you can purchase with confidence, knowing that each product you receive is a true, genuine part.

Find The Learn Button On The Garage Door Opener
The LEARN button is crucial when programming your garage opener. The LEARN button establishes communication between the opener and the remote.
The location of this button revolves around the different models, but its usually close to the antenna in most garage door openers.
The wire of the antennas color matches the color of the button, so if the wire is yellow, the button will be yellow too.
Are Chamberlain And Liftmaster Products Compatible With Craftsman Garage Door Openers
The Chamberlain Group also produces Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door openers. So, any product from the company will most likely be compatible with Craftsman. While there might be some differences between LiftMaster and Craftsman, most Chamberlain products and Craftsman share several similarities. They both have similar drive formats, except that Chamberlain has the wall-mounted or jackshaft option.
The similarities between Chamberlain and Craftsman garage door openers include:
- Variety of models and price range
- Easy to install features for homeowners that want to do it themselves
- Powerful motors with as much as ¾ horsepower
- Compatibility with MyQ smartphone technology
- Standby power systems that allow operation when theres an outage
- Extension kits for doors that are above 7 feet
- Rolling technology.
The similarities between the two means that its possible to use parts of a Chamberlain garage door opener as a replacement for a Craftsman. You can even use a corresponding LiftMaster part as a replacement. Since LiftMaster products are usually cheaper than Craftsman, this is a cost-effective move for you.
However, this only applies if the Craftsman product is from Chamberlain Group. You can tell if a Craftsman is from Chamberlain by the model number. If it starts with 139, its compatible with other Chamberlain products. But if it starts with 200, then Guardian manufactured it. So, it wont be compatible.

Can You Still Buy A Craftsman Garage Door Opener Remote
Fortunately for you, the remote control technology used in many garage door remotes is universal. Most systems use a 315 MHz transmitter and radio.
The remote sends a signal to the opener itself, which syncs up with the radio in the garage unit. However, nearly everyone has a garage door, so this presents a problem.
After all, you dont want your neighbors opener talking to your door. To solve this problem, manufacturers use a rolling code. This allows the opener unit to sync with the remote control to recognize a code that changes with every use.
But enough with the tech talk. What youre here to learn is how to get your Craftsman garage door remote synced up with a replacement remote. Dont worry, well get there in a second.
Before we do, however, you should know that many garage openers are universal. In fact, so are most keypads and key chain remotes.
The benefit to you is that you can buy a single universal garage door opener. With one tap of the learn button youll be synced with any of the following brands:
- Sears/Craftsman
Of course, a universal remote control will work on nearly any system, including some generic units from home improvement stores.
How Can You Troubleshoot Craftsman Garage Door Openers
If your opener doesnt respond to the new remote control, you should check if youre out of range.
The Craftsman garage door opener has a range of up to 100 feet. Beyond that range, the opener will not receive the signal from the remote.
Another possible issue is that the batteries in the remote might be weak and need replacing. Check the openers sensors if youve tried replacing the batteries and the opener still isnt responding.
The sensors tend to be on either side of the garage door. If the sensors are dirty, they might not be able to pick up the signal from the remote.
You can clean the sensors with a cloth. If that doesnt work, try realigning them. The sensors should be pointing directly at each other. If theyre not, the opener wont be able to pick up the signal from the remote.
You can also check if there is power going to the reed switch. You will find the reed switch on the openers motor unit. Youll need a multimeter to check if there is power going to the reed switch.
First, disconnect the opener from the power source. Then, adjust the multimeter to the continuity setting and touch the leads to the terminals on the reed switch.
If the multimeter beeps, it means there is power going to the reed switch. The reed switch might be defective and need replacing if it doesnt beep.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener Remote Problems
I have a 1/2 hp craftsman garage door opener. It worked fine with both remotes until we changed a battery in one of the remotes. Now only one remote will work at a time. I can get both remotes to work, but only one at a time. As soon as you add the other remote the first one will quit, and vice versa. Tried adding a craftsman keypad, same problem. As soon as the keypad is added, and starts working, neither remote will work. Add a remote, keypad stops working. Sears is of no help, they only want to send out a service tech. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!
I have exactly the same problem. I am truly hoping someone wiser than me, will respond to your posting with a solution.
My units is a 1/2 HP Craftsman Unit from 1997.
I’ve been having the same problem with a brand new 1/2 HP model. It works fine with the remotes that came with it but the keypad and a third remote won’t work. I checked the model number on the remote and it’s the same as the ones in the store. The keypad is a different model number but it’s only a year old. The “kid” in the store said it should work. If I knew it wouldn’t, I’d have bought the next model up which, comes with the keypad as part of the package! Sounds like Sears is no help either.
