Garage Door Manufacturers Recommended Lubricants
A good place to start is what the manufacturer recommends.
So, I scoured the owners manuals for the five major garage door manufacturers to see if they recommend one type of lubricant over the other.
Most had very specific garage door maintenance recommendations. Some of which were surprising.
Amarr specifically recommends lubricating their garage doors yearly with Amarr Super Lube or similar non-silicone-based lubricant .
Cloplay recommends lubricating their garage doors at least twice per yearwith Clopay Garage Door Pro Lube or a synthetic lubricant. Although they dont prohibit using a silicone-based lubricant, its worth noting that their product does not contain silicone.
Overhead Door doesnt specify a type of lubrication for their garage doors beyond saying that a 30w or other medium weight oil is satisfactory.
Raynor is the only garage door manufacturer to recommend a silicone or Teflon® based spray. They also specifically warn against using WD-40® type lubricant or grease.
Wayne-Dalton, which is who makes my garage door, recommends a non-silicon based lubricant.

What Kind Of Grease Is Best For Garage Doors
Before we tackle those garage-door screeches, we must find the right kind of grease. One of the most common mistakes people use when trying to grease their garage door is using oil-based products, like WD-40. Contrary to popular belief, WD-40 de-greases surfaces and wont aid in reducing unwanted noises.
Instead of WD-40 or other oils, use a lithium-based grease, which usually comes in a spray can. Youll notice that, unlike oil-based sprays, a lithium garage door lubricant will appear thick and wont drip.
If youre unable to find a lithium-based spray, use a lubricant with a silicone base. Although its not as effective as lithium grease, silicone-based spray is a much better option than oil.

How To Lubricate Your Garage Door
Have you been having trouble trying to get rid of the squeaking noise coming from your garage door? We want to explain to you how to take care of that problem with a couple of do-it-yourself solutions and some valuable information on how to properly lubricate your garage door.
One of the most common errors that homeowners make when greasing the garage door is that they use regular oil or ever-so-popular WD 40. The main problem with WD-40 and oil is that theyre degreasers, so theyre actually taking out the grease rather than helping your situation.
The best thing to use is lithium-based grease. If you cant find the lithium spray at your local Home Depot, Lowes, or hardware store, the next best thing would be a silicone spray, its not as good as lithium, but its a hundred times better than using WD-40. The lithium spray leaves a generous thick coat that doesnt run or drip like oil.
So how to lubricate your garage door properly?
Garage door opener chains come out of the factory with a protective coat already on it that should last the life of the motor. If you ever feel the need to give your chain a little love to help maintain it take a cloth spread a little WD-40 on it and wipe it down, thatll help repel moisture.

Rollers: Lubricating Ball Bearings
Depending on what type of garage door rollers you have, this step will be optional.
Many rollers will have small ball bearings inside to help them move freely.
If you have rollers with exposed ball bearings, shoot a little grease on them, so they keep moving freely. Some rollers, like the DURA-LIFT rollers you see above, have a sealed system, so theres nothing to lubricate.
Plastic rollers dont have bearings either, so theres nothing to lubricate.
However, plastic rollers werent designed to last more than a few years. If youve got these on your door, you should look to replace your garage door rollers with nylon rollers as soon as possible.
Genie Screw Drive Lube
This product is made of lithium-grease, which makes it easy to apply. It comes in 3 packs to save you the hustle of continually buying others.
Genie lube comes in the form of a gel as opposed to spray. This lubricant is specifically recommended for use in the genie garage opener. Nonetheless, it can be applied in any garage door.
The product is excellent as it reduces your garage door noise. It has properties that prolong the life of the door hinges and screw drives by reducing friction, the leading cause of wear. Most users say that it is easy to apply as you only need to squirt and spread it on the garage door it does not drip.
Even though the company does an excellent job of packing it in 3 economical packs, the sizes are small and might not be enough for a big garage door. Many clients complain that the size is not enough for a full application. Overall, the size does not affect the quality.

Garage Door Lubrication: The Center Rail
Heres where I had it all wrong.
I was spraying the bottom of the garage door openers center rail, thinking that it would help.
Think of the track like an upside-down T.
Your garage door opener has a trolley that runs along the top edge of the track. If you lubricate the bottom of the track, youre spraying things that will never get touched.
You should be spraying the TOP edge of the center track, which is what makes contact with the edges of the trolley as it moves along, pulling the door up.
In my case, the track is almost completely enclosed, which shields it from any dust or debris that can get in and clog up the system. It doesnt mean that I get a free pass and never have to lubricate this section.
Grease All Moving Parts
Now, youre prepared to start lubricating your garage door. Pay specific attention to these parts as you begin the process:
Hinges: To lubricate the hinges of your garage door, its best to lift the door up manually generously spray each hinge as it bends open.
Rollers: The rollers of your garage door are small, circular pieces attached to the end of your hinges. They are usually made of metal or plastic and help your garage door roll up and down the track. If your rollers are plastic, there is no need to grease them .
Metal rollers, on the other hand, have ball bearings that should be lubricated using the small hose attachment that comes with your spray can. After youve greased the inside of your roller, be sure to wipe away any excess garage door lubricant.
Springs: Your garage door spring will be located at the top of the door, towards the center. If you have an extension spring, which stretches as the door opens, dont worry about lubricating them they come pre-coated and should be good to go. But if you have a squeaky torsion spring, which is wound instead of stretched, grease it up! Generously spray the coils of the spring.
Note: Its common for springs to bend out of shape. If youre having a problem with your springs and grease doesnt seem to do the trick, contact your local garage door service department. Well get your door up and running in no time!

Choosing The Right Garage Door Lubricant For Your Door
You may be wondering how to grease a garage door, but it all starts with choosing the right product. Look for silicone sprays or white lithium grease when selecting a garage door lubricant. Aerosol sprays are your best option when it comes to injecting lubricant into small moving parts. Standard degreasers , mechanics grease, and engine oil are susceptible to dirt and dust buildup, so youll want to avoid these products.

An improperly maintained garage door can cause it to become loud and squeaky. More importantly, a noisy door is a sign that your garage door isn’t greased enough, which could lead to more serious damage later on. Luckily, with proper maintenance and lubrication, you can prevent the noise and extend the life of your garage door.XResearch source
How To Lubricate Garage Door Rollers & Hinges
Garage door rollers have two parts that need lubrication: the ball bearings inside the roller wheel and the metal shaft that slides in the bracket on the door.
To start, spray some grease at the edge of both sides of the bracket . If you get the angle correct, this should force grease into the entire bracket.
Dont be stingy here.
Our goal is to spread the grease evenly along the entire shaft when we open and close the door.
Do the same for each of the hinges, including the hinges along the center of the door.
The hinges hold the door together while it moves up and down the track, so they take a lot of abuse.
Similar to how we lubricated the rollers shaft, spray Lithium grease on any of the door hinges moving parts. We want the grease to spread evenly and lubricate the entire hinge.
While youre here, check to see if any bolts are loose and tighten them up, and look for any miscellaneous garage door parts that need to be repaired or replaced.
Finally, its a good idea to take a clean, damp rag and wipe off any accumulated dirt, dust or debris on the roller wheel.

Blaster Garage Door Lubricant
Blaster lubricant is built to eliminate squeaks and make your garage door quiet and smooth. It is made of elements that help reduce friction and wear. It is silicone-based and does not accumulate dirt and dust.
The feature we like about this lubricant is it is easy to apply and penetrates quickly in hard-to-reach places. With one application, you will get rid of creaking noise and have the door opening without any difficulty. If it is crucial to find a lubricant that is not harsh on rubber, plastic, and metal, this might be an excellent product to start with.
This lubricant does not dry as fast as the other products we have reviewed here. Moreover, the sprayer nozzle is poorly designed, making it easy to leave a mess when applying.
