Never Worry About Accidentally Leaving Your Garage Door Open Again

Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage Hub Review: Giving my 22 year old opener new life

I have, on occasion, been known to leave the garage door open by accident. Chamberlain’s smart garage door openers promise to solve this problem in two ways: they’ll alert you when your garage door is open for longer than 10 minutes, and they’ll allow you to close it from afar using your phone. But if you aren’t interested in installing an entirely new opener, you can buy the MyQ Smart Garage Hub which controls your existing opener over WiFi.

Yes It’s An Essentially Free Security Upgrade To Your Home

The MyQ Smart Garage Hub is not as advanced as it could be, but in our testing, it was easy to use and reliablewhich are the most important features, and for $30, it’s hard to go too wrong. Heck, you get your money back with one Amazon Key in-garage delivery, so it’s hard to turn down. In fact, when the Smart Garage Hub goes on salelike this year’s $17 deal on Prime DayAmazon’s literally paying you to try it out, so you don’t have much to lose. That is, provided Amazon Key is available in your area.

If all you need is the ability to check the open/close status of your door, you could use a regular door sensor with an existing security system like SimpliSafe, though you’d have to walk downstairs to close the door if you find it was left open. The MyQ Smart Garage Hub may not be incredible, but for the price, it’s hard to go wrong for the convenience boost and peace of mind.

Chamberlain Myq Smart Garage Hub Review

I recently picked up a Chamberlain MyQ smart garage hub during Amazons Prime Day. It was only $30 which seemed like a great deal. After all, some of the big time product review sites list the device as the best smart garage door controller.

After using it for about a month, I dont think its the best one out there, but for the price its hard to beat. I think if youre a casual smart home user looking for a widely compatible device thats easy to install and use, youll be happy with the Chamberlain MyQ.

Can Siri Or Alexa Open The Garage Door

Many smart garage door openers are compatible with other smart home devices, such as Amazon Echo or your smartphone. By integrating your smart garage door opener with compatible devices, you could open the door for guests while sticking a roast in the oven by saying “Alexa, open the garage door,” or even close the garage door behind you while your hands are full of groceries with a simple “Siri, close the garage door.”

How To Mount The Myq Hub Near The Garage Door Opener

  • Get your tools ready. You will need a pencil/marker, a Philips screwdriver, a 5/32 drill bit and drill, a stepladder, and safety goggles. The bracket, screws, and wall anchors are provided with the hub.
  • Choose a spot on the ceiling 5 to 6 feet from the garage door opener. You should choose a spot where you can see the flashing light of the hub from the entrance of your garage. It should also be near a power outlet.
  • The brackets open ends should face the ceiling.
  • Drill holes into the marked spots.
  • Then push in the anchors, making sure they are flush against the ceiling.
  • Screw the mounting bracket into place.
  • Slide the garage hub onto the bracket until it clicks into place.
  • Plug the power cord into the hub. If your cord is too long, you can wrap the excess around the hub.

How To Install The Myq Garage Door Sensor

  • Choose the garage doors top panel where you want to mount the sensor. Wipe off any dust with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Attach the supplied adhesive strips to the back of the sensor. To do this, peel off the adhesive cover and attach the strip to the back of the sensor one at a time. Remove the two remaining adhesive covers from the strips. Warning: do not split the strips apart.
  • Firmly position the sensor on the garage door panel. Make sure the sensor is upright: the word top on the sensor should face upwards, and you can read the myQ logo correctly.

A new option… and peace of mind! The system also offers the ability to sign up for a program with Amazon Prime, that allows the delivery driver to open your garage and place your package inside. Out of the weather, out of sight of any possible package stealers.

Will My Smart Garage Door Opener Work If The Power Goes Out

Garage door openers, smart or not, run on electricity, which means it will not work in the case of a power outage. You may still be able to manually open and close your garage door, but try to avoid doing this unless absolutely necessary, like if you need to get your car out. It can be hazardous to force a garage door up or down with an opener attached.

    Smart Garage Door Openers 101

If you already own a motorized garage opener, even one with a belt drive opener or a chain drive, you can use one of the easy add-on accessories above for smart garage door control. If you’re in the market for a whole new opener mechanism and you want a smart device, you can find smart opener and door sensor options from makers such as Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Ryobi.

Smart garage door controllers come in a few variations. In general, a control attaches to your existing opener with a double-sided adhesive strip. In most cases, you’ll need to attach two small wires to the open and close command nodes on your existing garage door opener.

Smart garage kits also typically include some type of sensor to attach to your garage door. This sensor detects and transmits your garage door status, so the control accurately knows whether the door is open, closed or somewhere in between, and with the garage door opener app, can send you a push notification if your garage is open when it shouldn’t be. It also usually serves as a safety sensor.

The ability to connect to a Wi-Fi signal is key to ensuring your new smart garage door and remote control work the way you want them to. On the smart side, an add-on controller connects to your Wi-Fi network, which is easy enough. You’ll need a strong 2.4GHz internet connection that reaches your garage. Typically, a corresponding app will walk you through adding your device to the network, as well as the general installation.

    What To Look Forward To

iSmartGate launched the iSmartGate Mini, the cheapest model in its lineup starting at $50. The new version has features similar to those of the Lite model but will work with a wired or wireless sensor, though it doesnt support HomeKit or Samsung SmartThings. The company has also released a Switch Adaptor to make all of its controllers compatible with the newer Chamberlain-brand openers, which we are currently testing. The iSmartGate Pro+ was also announced but hasnt yet been released.

The Eufy Garage-Control Cam, announced in January 2022, has a built-in camera and door sensor that uses AI to detect people and vehicles in the garage it also includes voice control and geofencing detection. It will have a 1080p camera and will be available in a single-door control version for $100 or in a 2K, two-door control version for $130. We dont have a firm arrival date.

The Wyze Garage Door Controller is a unique new model that relies on an included Wyze camera and AI to determine if your garage door is open rather than relying on physical sensors. An included controller device plugs into your existing door opener and allows you to use an app to open and close your door. Interestingly the controller also has a built-in smoke and carbon monoxide detector. You can opt to buy a kit that includes a Wyze v3 camera for $40, or just the controller module for $19.
