Single Vs Dual Hose Units

Best Portable AC for Garage – Top 5 Portable AC of 2021

There are two ways to get enough air blowing over the condenser coil to remove all that heat: You can use the air from your room, or you can bring in air from outside, which is what the second hose in a dual-hose air conditioner does.

We asked Richard Ciresi, the owner of Aire Serv Heating & Air Conditioning in Louisville, to explain which cases make sense for a dual-hose system compared to the more popular single-hose designs.

Generally speaking, Richard says, it depends on the temperature outside. A single-hose unit uses air that you have paid to condition and sends it outside. Warm air from the outdoors is then drawn into the space to replace the exhausted air.

If its really warm outside, this gets expensive. If someone is using this device as a permanent solution, the will be an energy saver over the life of the unit.

In our tests, we found that on a moderately hot day the LG single-hose champion could beat the dual-hose Whynter at cooling a small room.

On hot summer evenings, when temperatures outside drop to the 80s but its still 85 inside after a scorching afternoon, the single-hose system also helps move all that hot air out and cools the room more quickly.

Note that in either case, youre still getting relatively cool air out of the front of your air conditioner compared to the rest of your room the problem is with the average air temperature climbing.

Which Brand Makes The Best Mini Splits For Garage

If youre going to use a mini split in your garage, you want to opt for a reliable unit. The best way to ensure you pick a reliable and durable mini split is to go with a reliable brand.

Manufacturers that make smaller mini split AC units appropriate for garages include MrCool, Hunter & Cooper, Pioneer, Daikin, Mitsubishi, Carrier, Trane, and so on.

The big brands like Mitsubishi, MrCool, Carrier and Trane do make reliable mini split but, in most cases, their smaller 12,000 BTU or 18,000 BTU mini splits are quite costly. MrCool is an exception here they make superb mini splits for the garage for less than $2,000 and you can DIY the installation .

The best price-performance brands have a lower price of these smaller garage mini split. These include Pioneer, Hunter & Cooper, DELLA, and Klimaire, to name just a few.

The rule of thumb for a reliable brand is this:

If you havent heard of the company, it usually doesnt have a long track record with air conditioners. The brand having a long and successful track record is the key thing you want to look out for when choosing a reliable mini split for your garage.

With all of this in mind, lets look at specific mini split units that are best fit to be installed in the garage:

Problems With Using Portable Air Conditioners In Your Garage

There are other problems with using portable air conditioners in your garage.

At a VERY high level, an air conditioner brings in warm air through an inlet valve, cools it down and sends it into your room. The warm exhaust air is then kicked back outside and the process starts over.

For more details, I really recommend this video from Technology Connections. Nobody is ever going to say that digging into how portable air conditioners work is exciting stuff, but he at least makes it interesting.

The point I want to make is that the exhaust air needs to go somewhere. If your garage doesnt have a window or a vent that you can connect the air conditioner to, then that air is just going to go right back into your garage.

That may actually increase your garages temperature instead of lowering it.

Finally, as I said before, if your garage isnt insulated, all that cold air will just bleed through to the outside.

All that said, in some cases, a portable air conditioner can be the right solution. It just takes a little knowledge to pick the right one.

How Do I Know Which Kind Of Portable Garage Ac Unit Is Best

There are several different types of garage air conditioners on the market. One of the popular options is a swamp cooler. These units work best in low humidity and are great for hot, dry parts of the country. Swamp coolers, also known as evaporative coolers, often utilize tanks filled with water or sometimes ice. The evaporation of the water or ice cools the air that blows from the unit.

Depending on your model, evaporative coolers may need additional maintenance such as changing water filters and draining the unit at the end of the season. On some units, you will need to manually refill the water tank or you can look for a unit that comes with a hose attachment. The hose attachment will allow you to hook the unit directly into a water source so you dont have to worry about manual refills.

For garages with windows, consider a window air conditioning unit. These units can be installed directly into the window or have a tube that goes out of the window and use fresh air from outside to cool the garage.

Using An Air Purifier Inside Your Garage

How to Air Condition Your Garage CHEAP – DIY

After making sure to well ventilate your garage, you may consider an air purifier, especially if you spend a lot of time there. The type of air purifier best for your garage depends on how you use it. However, given the amount of VOCs produced in a typical garage, a carbon filter is going to quickly become saturated and need to be replaced. Ventilation and air turnover is a better way to deal with VOCs in your garage.

Is It Time To Get A New Portable Ac Units For Garage

Youre looking for a new portable ac units for garage. What do you think? Its difficult to predict future price changes. If there are no signs of production slowing, it can be worth buying now to enjoy your investment sooner. But if output is declining and prices are predicted to rise, you might want to wait until the buzz has died down before making a choice.

What Is A Btu

You may have heard the term BTUs before. BTUs, or British Thermal Units, are an internationally used unit of measure for energy.

One BTU is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit at a specified temperature.

However, for air conditioning, thats not the definition everyone uses. They like to keep you on your toes.

When you see BTUs listed on an air conditioner, its instead referring to the amount of heat the device can dissipate in one hour from a determined room.

That means youll need a different BTU rating depending on the size of the room youre trying to cool down. Keep in mind that a higher BTU rating will almost always mean a larger, heavier, and more expensive air conditioner unit.

Portable Air Conditioner Glossary

In the heating and cooling industry, there’s a lot of jargon to wade through. What do all of those acronyms and terms even mean? Here are the definitions for a few that you’ll commonly hear:

Btu: This is short for British thermal units. One Btu is equal to the amount of heat needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. In cooling, Btu is used to measure how much heat is removed from a room. The more Btu per hour an air conditioner is rated for, the better job it does cooling.

Compressor: The compressor works to push the hot air outside so cold air can circulate in your room. The gas refrigerant within the cooling system takes on the heat from the air, and the compressor turns the hot gas refrigerant back into a liquid. It works with the condenser on the air conditioner’s hot side to dissipate the heat from the refrigerant. Along with the condenser and evaporator, the compressor is one of the three main components of any air conditioning unit.

kWh: This is short for kilowatt-hour. It’s a unit of energy that most electricity utilities use to measure your power use, and it’s what we use to measure the energy consumption of the air conditioners we test.

Window slider: This is the long, adjustable piece of plastic that comes with your portable AC and goes in your window’s opening. The hose from your portable AC connects to the slider to send the hot air emitted from the unit outside. Installing the window slider is the main step in installing a portable AC.
