If you have a garage, then you might want to create a little bit of attic storage above it. The biggest problem with these types of spaces is load capacity. If the trusses of your garage roof cannot support an attic, you will find that holes will develop in the ceiling of the garage. However, if the load capacity is large, then you will be able to support an attic storage space.

Shelves Over The Garage Door

We found a place to hoard, I mean store, more of our crap, I mean prized possessions.

Over the garage door, .

Heres the spot. Since our ceiling is 10 foot tall, there was plenty of room to install a couple of shelves and still leave plenty of clearance for the door to open.

Built us a couple of 2 foot by 8 foot frames out of 2X4s. And then mounted them with lag screws into the studs because we dont want anything crashing down on our heads.

After completing the cedar planking around the frames, we added a platform of plywood. Plywood comes in 4X8 sheets so we just had the H-depot half-Z it.

Our shelves are the perfect size for 6 tubs of assorted importance.

Not quite sure about the view from underneath..we havent decided if seeing the plywood bothers us. Probably not, it is just a garage after all.

Thats 12 tubs that are now tucked out of our way, mostly christmas decorations. I think this falls under the catagory of Organized Hoarding. L O V E a label maker.

Pay no attention to that white cord that runs along the ceiling that powers the garage door opener. We have plans to cover it with a box of some sort.still working on those details.

Just to make sure our new shelves are extra supported, we reinforced the corners with chain. Eye hooks in the ceiling studs are connected with a short distance of chain. The trick to this is the turnbuckle eye/hook. This small piece of genius tightens the distance between the shelf and the ceiling.

Line Garage Walls With Tool Racks

We’ve all seen the Chaplin-esque comedy sketches of people stepping on rakes and leaving long-handled tools like brooms lying around will invite this kind of trip hazard. So copy this garage storage idea and get tools up off the floor with a garden storage rack. You can also find smaller versions for screwdrivers, hammers and chisels to save you from rummaging in drawers of sharp tools.

Mark Stud Locations And Fasten 2x2s To The Wall

Next, I went ahead and found my stud locations in the first area where Id be adding shelving then transferred those locations to my 2×2 horizontal support pieces. Once the stud locations were marked out, I partially drove in screws in those locations, which really simplified things when it was time to mount the pieces. Also, I used 3 screws anywhere I was fastening these 2x2s to the walls or ceiling and they provided a ton of strength.

With the screws already in the board, mounting the 2×2 was super easy, and I just made sure it was level and also that the distance from the ceiling to the 2×2 was what I needed it to be, 31 ¾ in my case. Once again, I would have made that distance about two inches longer, but Ill get to that in a bit.

Next, I mounted another 2×2 to the ceiling, making sure I was driving screws into the joist above. Having Alex there to help definitely came in handy this time, as its pretty tough to hold these boards up and drive in the screws by yourself. Id definitely recommend finding a helper on this project if you can.

Repurpose A Pallet For Diy Garage Storage

How to build a HUGE STORAGE SHELF above garage door for less than $30

Long-handled yard and garden tools can be difficult to store. All you need for this pallet organization hack is a pallet, a couple of screws and a drill. And if you dont have any pallets lying around, they are easy to get for free. This is a quick one-hour project and after youre done, your tools will be organized and easy to reach. Its a cheap DIY garage storage idea.

You could easily attach this pallet to a fence, shed or to the exposed wall studs in your garage. No matter what you choose, youll want to make sure that your screws are long enough to go through both your pallet and the wall you are attaching it to. We drilled two screws into the pallet, one into each exposed wall stud. You wont need a ton of screws or nails because the pallet isnt all that heavy. Now you have a quick and free way to store your lawn tools!

The Best Way To Pull Into The Garage

Heres how to make sure that your cars will always be a good fit:

  • Skip the motion sensors that tell you exactly how far to pull the car in just hang a tennis ball on a string from the ceiling so that it taps the windshield when youre in the right spot. Ideally, you should be able to walk between the garages back wall and your car.
  • Protect your cars finish by attaching pieces of scrap carpeting to the walls in spots where the doors or bumper might hit them.
  • Leave the center aisle between two vehicles as wide as possible so that you can roll trash bins to the curb or move bulky objects around without interference.
  • If you have a minivan, back it into the garage with the sliding doors facing the center, then park your sedan next to it facing forward to allow easy access to both vehicles.
  • Making The Most Out Of Narrow Above Garage Door Storage

If your garage is like mine, after this initial assessment, I discovered that there is not much space between the garage door and the garage ceiling. This limits the options for things like shelving but is not a storage deal-breaker! And It doesnt mean that the space is completely unusable! Flatter, narrower tools, and items may find a safe haven here. I am considering storing my extension ladder, as it is skinny, lightweight, and isnt something I use all the time. The installation is fairly user-friendly as well with the right drill bit and some sturdy hooks, my ladder will fit securely above the garage door. You can also check out some pulley storage systems. These are affordable and give easy access for ladder storage on the garage ceiling.

    Install 2×4 Uprights In Garage

    4

With the 2x2s mounted, I could get the 2×4 uprights prepped by driving in more screws, 2 ½ screws this time. I also ended up pre-drilling these holes later on to help avoid splitting the 2x4s and it helped a ton.

Once the screws were in, I could go ahead and get the uprights mounted to the 2x2s, making sure they were level. The spacing on all of these pieces is pretty specific, and here is a link to free plans for these shelves.

Also, I didnt end up adding glue to these joints on this first shelf, but I ended up coming back and adding it later, and I also added it to the rest of the uprights moving forward. These shelves ended up holding a ton of weight, and the glue will help keep the joints strong over time.

    Install Vertical Organizing Systems

    Pegboard:

For example: 48-by-96-inch white hardboard pegboard lowes.com

    Track-based systems:

    • Pros: Shelf standards hang from a single track affixed to wall studs, so these systems can bear the weight of heavier objects standards, hooks, shelves, and organizers can be relocated easily.
    • Cons: You must make sure the track is level so that the standards hang straight theyre best for garage walls that are finished and plumb.

    For example: elfa containerstore.com

    Panelized Systems:

Pros: The entire wall is finished with slotted plastic panels that hold lock-in hooks, shelves, and cabinets so that every square inch of wall space can be put to use.

    • Cons: Some systems must be installed by trained professionals, adding to the cost youre limited to system-compatible organizing products.

    All About Storage & Organization

Keep The Garage Neat With Cabinets

Just like inside your home, its worth including cabinets in your range of garage storage so you can shut the doors on your stuff for a neater impression. Items can be stored loose on shelves inside, or use them for lidded boxes for items such as decorations that are needed only seasonally.

If youre adding cabinets to the garage, look out for features such as adjustable feet so they can be leveled on an uneven floor. Home Depot has plenty of Ready-to-assemble picks.

    Top Piece Of The Track

I cut a piece of 2″ x 3″ lumber 52 inches long. Since I was using 3-1/2″ long screws but wanted more than 1-1/2 inches of screw going into the joist, I counter-bored three holes with a 3/8″ diameter forstner bit about one inch deep. I then drilled thru the board with a 3/16″ diameter bit. I drilled 3 holes, one in the center and the other two 24 inches from the center. I then put the #10 x 3-1/2″ screws in the three holes and the track was ready to screw to the joists.

In hindsight, I wish I had made these a little bit longer on one end and tapered them. This would have given a funnel affect to help guide the totes into the tracks. I might make some wedges to add to the ends of them.
