  • Cchryssc on Nov 11, 2009Hoping someone can help me troubleshoot the problem …My Genie Intellicode Screw-type GDO will not lift the door off the floor. The GDO will close the door but experiences slippage over the last foot or two of the decent. Could the thread be stripped or is the issue likely a capacitor malfunction ?When the GDO tries to lift the door, there’s a grinding noise that occurs before the door is even lifted off the floor. The door will open and close manually. If this is a stripped track issue, is a new GDO a less expensive alternative to a track replacement?Appreciate anyone who has experience in this arena offering their experience and guidance.

Garage Door Opener Costs

Most can be opened manually, but many people opt to have an automatic opener installed to open the door with ease. Garage door openers come in many forms to meet the needs of different types. Belt-drive and chain-drive openers are the most popular with homeowners. Belt drives are great for single-car garages, but they can struggle when it comes to lifting bigger doors. For heavier glass or wood garage doors, screw drives or chain drives are a better choice.

How To Measure The Opening And Surrounding Conditions In Preparation Of A New Garage Door

Rough Opening For 8X7 Garage Door

A very common question to garage door dealers is what size should I make the garage door rough opening?. In most cases the answer would be that you want to make the opening the same size as the door and that is the stock answer you will usually get.

However the correct answer should be that you want the finished opening to be the same size or slightly smaller than the door, so the rough opening will depend on what you are putting on the sides of the opening and underneath the header. Therefore making the width of the garage door rough opening the same size as the door would be fine if you are going to use a thin layer of stucco, vinyl siding, or 1-by-lumber. However if you are putting bricks, thick river rock stones, marble, or anything else on both sides that is more than 1 thick you will want the rough opening the same size as the door plus twice the thickness of the material and the inner space, backing or mortar that you are applying. For instance, if you have a 16 door and are using river stones that are approximately 2 to 2-1/2 you will want the rough opening to be roughly 166.

Install The Side Jambs

Cut two pieces of lumber or PVC door jambs to the new height of your opening. The side jambs will hit the bottom of the jamb header youve already installed. These jambs should be the exact height of your garage door minus 1/4 of an inch, so they dont quite hit the ground. Attach these door jambs using framing nails.

We recommend using double side jambs to support this weight, so you will need to install two trimmers each on the left and right side. Once youve installed the side jambs, the door opening should have the same dimensions as your new door.

Attach Each Side Jamb

With the goalposts in place, the next thing is to attach the side jambs. First, measure the distance from the floor to the header. Cut out the two pieces of PVC jamb or lumber according to the measurements. The jambs run from the floor to the head jamb. The side jambs should be about ¼ an inch less the height of the garage door. This ensures that they are not placed directly on the floor.

Once youre sure about measurements, secure the side jambs with nails. It is better to install double side jambs that will support the entire frame. Now measure the finished opening to make sure that it is the exact size as the garage door.

How Do You Frame A Rough Opening On A Garage Door

If youre planning on installing a garage door, one of the first things youll need to do is frame the opening. This can seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and execution it can be easily accomplished. Here are some tips on how to frame a rough opening for your garage door:1. The first thing youll need to do is measure the width and height of the opening. Be sure to take into account any trim or molding that will be around the door. Youll also need to factor in the thickness of the door itself.2. Once you have your measurements, mark out the rough opening on your wall studs or plates. Its important to make sure that the opening is square, so use a level or tape measure to check for plumb and level as you mark out the opening.3. Cut out the rough opening using a saw. If youre using wood studs, be careful not to damage any surrounding insulation when cutting through them.4. With the rough opening cut out, its time to start framing it in. Begin by attaching headers across the top and sides of the opening . Then add in vertical studs along each side of the header, making sure theyre flush with the outside edge ofthe header . Finally, add horizontal crosspieces between each pair of studs at either end ofthe framing assembly these will provide additional support for your door once installed.

Glass Garage Door Cost

Glass garage doors are more expensive, ranging between $900 to $4,500. They can enhance your curb appeal and open up your interior space by allowing more natural light inside. These are often made out of tempered glass, which compete against wood and aluminum in strength. Additionally, they are low-maintenance and never require painting. On the flip side, they are heavy, making installation more of a hassle. They also lack the insulation that vinyl and fiberglass provide.

  • Many 16 x 7 garage doors are designed with a pair of single 8-foot garage door bays. These bays are separated by a central post or column. Many home builders do not consider this a structural necessity, but rather offer a style choice for the homeowner.
  • One double door can be more visually prominent than two single doors.

How Much Space Should Be Left For An Opener

Garage door openers with drawbar operation have rails that are about 2 1/2 tall. If space is tight above the door this added space requirement will need to be accounted for. If you want to install an opener on an existing door you will need to about 3 of additional headroom to fit the rail and mounting bracket above the torsion spring shaft.

Space for sidemount jackshaft openers is similar to standard openers. The casing for the opener sits above the torsion spring line. Because of this 4 inches of space above the torsion shaft is required.

Cut Out The Goal Post

Answers to questions about a buried steel or concrete shed, how to set ...

The next step is to prepare to install the goal post. The goal post is the jamb that moves from the floor to the ceiling of your garage. This is where the tracks of the garage door are attached to the interior wall. Again, there is an emphasis on making correct dimensions. The two jambs are placed on opposite sides of the wall next to the garage door.

Use your tape to measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling. When youre sure you have the right length, trace it on the lumber of a PVC jamb, and cut out the two pieces youll need for the goal post. You can always trim the edges to make sure you have the perfect fit.

Garage Door Installation Process

The process for installing any garage door starts with measurements. While most are a standard size, some homes need a custom door. For most types, the panels are installed first, then the track that it will slide in, along with the hinges. The spring assembly that raises the door is attached, the tracks are bolted together, and then, the spring is installed and tightened.

These will be made from 2×6 lumber and should also be level with each other. Again, predrill holes before attaching them with screws or nails. Now its time for vertical studs which will provide support for your garage door itself.
