What Is The Standard Height Of A Garage Door
It is very important for you to determine the height of your garage door because this enables the entry for the vehicles. If you do not have enough headroom for the garage, cars will not be able to enter it.
That is why many people tend to follow standard measurements for the garage door. The standard height for a garage tour is typically 7 to 8 feet. This height will be fine for any cars to enter your garage.
Some cars require higher headroom spaces for them to enter the garage, such as trucks, pickups, and minivans.
That is why, if you can manage to have 8 to 9 feet tall garage doors for your garage, this will typically fit any cars inside of it.
In addition to that, if you can manage to have the remodeling option for your garage, then you can add more headroom space if you want by remodeling it. This will enable you to change the garage structure depending on your choice.

Install The Head Jamb
Door jambs are the planks of wood on either side of the opening and the top header. Door installers sometimes refer to the two on either side as side jambs, and the one above the doorway as the head jamb.
It is vital to install the head jamb first, so the side jambs can rest flush against it. Measure the header to fit the horizontal opening of the garage, which should be the length of the garage door plus nine inches. Once youve cut your 2-by-6 inch lumber or PVC jamb to the correct height, attach it to the header using framing nails. The thickness of the header should cover the difference between the rough opening and the height of the garage door.

Start Your Garage Door Measurements
Now that you have an idea of the standard sizes of garage doors, its time to start the measuring process. Its important to double check everything youre about to do because your garage door measurements are crucial to getting the perfect garage door and making sure it fits properly. You dont want to get the wrong size garage door, right?
One last thing its important to note that all of these measurements are taken from the inside of your garage. Lets get started!
Know The Depth Of Your Garage
You should also know the depth of your garage before choosing the size of your door. When your garage door opens, it rides the track until its parallel with your ceiling. If you have a short garage, larger doors wont be able to open fully. Knowing the depth of your garage will prevent you from being limited with your garage door selection.
So how much room should you have for your garage door to open comfortably? The depth of your garage can be no less than 6 inches taller than your garage door. So if you have a 7 foot tall garage door, the depth of your garage shouldnt be shorter than 7 and a 1/2 feet.
If your home can accommodate a larger garage door and youd like one, make sure to get a track extension kit with your garage door opener. You can learn more about them in our garage door opener guide.

Install The Side Jambs
Cut two pieces of lumber or PVC door jambs to the new height of your opening. The side jambs will hit the bottom of the jamb header youve already installed. These jambs should be the exact height of your garage door minus 1/4 of an inch, so they dont quite hit the ground. Attach these door jambs using framing nails.
We recommend using double side jambs to support this weight, so you will need to install two trimmers each on the left and right side. Once youve installed the side jambs, the door opening should have the same dimensions as your new door.

When Building A New Home How Does One Determine Which Garage Door Size Is Best

When discussing construction plans for a new build, talk to your designer or architect about what vehicles you plan to keep in the garage, and how you plan to use the space. If you have a large SUV with a top-mount bicycle rack, you may want a door height greater than 7 feet, and if youre planning to park two cars in the garage, a third garage door can provide easy access to other items, like bicycles or a riding lawnmower.

Measure The Garage Door Rough Opening
Before you add your framing, the rough opening should be larger than the garage door youve chosen. The distance between the garage floor and the rough header should be one and a half inches longer than your new garage doors height. For example, in a standard seven-foot-tall garage door, the header should be eight and a half inches above the finished floor.
The header itself should be nine inches wider than the door. The rough openings width should be three inches longer than the door, measured between the left and right edges. So, in a 12-foot wide garage door, the rough opening will be 15 inches wide.
Installation Isnt A Diy Project
Now that you have your garage door measurements, you probably think you can do your own installation. That isnt the best idea. Installing a garage door is very tricky and you can mess up or damage your garage door easily if you dont know what youre doing.
If your garage door isnt measured properly, youll experience garage door alignment problems which is very unsafe. Also, there are many small parts that can be lost or broken as well. Its best to have a professional, who does this every day, handle your garage door installation.
It can also be very dangerous to do your own installation. If the parts of your garage door are damaged, it adds more stress on the rest of your door. If this is the case, youll notice that your garage door opens slowly and is heavy. There is also a risk of the door falling when its open if there is too much stress on it. A professional will make sure this problem doesnt occur. You can read our garage door buyers guide for more helpful tips about everything you need to know before replacing your garage door.
If the garage door isnt hung properly, you wont be able to enjoy its benefits. A replacement garage door is supposed to improve your homes curb appeal, make your home more energy efficient and provide protection. A poorly installed garage door will provide none of that for you.

Is There A Single Standard Door Size For Three
Three-car garages, depending on a homes construction, may be configured in different ways. Many newer homes feature one single door of 8 or 9 feet wide, and one double door 16 feet wide. Some homes have three separate doors of 8 or 9 feet wide. A single door spanning the entire width of a three-car garage might be too heavy to operate safely, which is why three-car garages are generally constructed with more than one garage door frame.

How To Measure Your Garage Door Height
To measure the height of your garage door, measure from the ground where the garage door rests to the horizontal jam board at the top of the opening. This will give you the proper garage door height. However, this wont be perfect, and depending on where you measure you may get different sizes. For example, your concrete could be uneven or your header could be sagging. These are common measuring issues that will result in odd sizes like 71 or 610.
The good thing is with the height of the garage door, you have some grace. A 7 garage door usually measures around 71 because the bottom section has a retainer and bottom seal on it. However, if you measure a 69 or a 610 height, we typically install a 69 door. This means one section will be 3 shorter than the other 21 sections. All this said, finding the right size garage door based on the height of your opening is a problem we can easily solve to get you the perfect new garage door.
How Much Overhead Clearance Is Needed For A Garage Door

The garage is considered one of the most used parts of your home. Whenever you go out with your car or come back home you will need to open the garage doors to park the car inside it.
That is why you need to be very careful when designing your garage. Your garage is not only about the white and length for your garage. When you design your garage, you also need to consider the door height and the overhead clearance space.
The overhead clearance space for your garage is a significant part of designing your garage because it will enable the openers to fold inside of it.
That is why you need to ensure proper spacing. Otherwise, the garage door wont be able to function properly.
A general rule of thumb to have overhead space clearance for your garage should be at least 12 inches. In some cases, it may take up to 18 inches as well.

Understanding Rough Openings For Garage Doors
It is crucial to understand the difference between the rough opening and the finished opening. In the garage door installation business, we refer to the rough opening or the rough framing as the size of the opening before the finished framing is applied. The rough opening should be slightly larger than the size of your garage door, to leave room for the frame.
The finished opening is the remaining negative space after you have installed the framing. This finished opening should be the same size as your new garage door, or slightly smaller. For example, if the door is 16-by-7 feet, then the completed garage door opening should also be 16-by-7 feet.
Standard and roll-up garage doors work differently than other kinds of residential doors. While garage doors close up against the rough opening, doors such as closets and front doors fit inside their finished openings.
What Size Custom Garage Doors Are Available
Standard garage door sizes of 8-9 feet wide and 7 feet tall for single garage doors, and 16 feet wide by 8 feet tall for double garage doors, may not offer adequate clearance for larger vehicles. What size custom garage door might help you better fit your vehicle?
Best single door size for large vehicles: 10 wide x 8 tall
- Housing todays larger vehicles is a common problem for many homeowners. A 10-foot-wide by 8-foot-tall garage door is large enough to offer ample access for most large vehicles.
Garage doors for high profile vehicles: 10 tall
- Taller vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, high roof cargo/passenger vans, and conversion vans and vehicles with rooftop storage racks, may require a door height of 10 feet or more.
Garage doors for RV parking: 12-14 wide x 14-16 tall
- RV specific garage doors are usually quite tall and wide. We typically see these on detached garages, as most attached garages are simply too short to house an RV.
Monster-sized, triple garage door: 36-40 wide x 8 tall
- These massive doors are economical and aesthetically pleasing, allowing you to fit three vehicles side-by-side.
Garden shed garage doors: 6 wide x 6.5 tall
- This size of door works well on the typical 18 x 24-foot workshop or garden shed.
